Bible Questions and Spiritual Discussion
Gospel Vs. Scripture
I realize this is a very elementary question and for that I apologize but I'm brand new to the Bible. I started reading it just 3 months ago. I listen to Brian every morning and I'm grateful I've found this community. With all that being said, I'm confused a lot of the time about the simplest of things! haha (like why some text was written in red; I finally know the answer to that question since I got up the nerve to ask one of my church friends!)

Here goes: I really don't understand what "gospel" is per se. I know what Book, Chapter, Verse mean. I know what scripture means. But, when people talk about 'the gospel', I draw a blank.

help.

The Gospel simply means "Good News". The first four books of the New Testament are referred to as the Gospels because they contain the story of Jesus and His sacrifice.

Matthew, Mark, Luke & John. (had to look those up!!!) Thank you so much, Mike. That is a simple yet right to the point definition and I thank you for taking the time to type in and explain that! :) :) :)

Paul outlines the Gospel in 1 Corinthians 15.

1 Corinthians 15:1-7 MEV
"1 Now, brothers, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which you have received, and in which you stand. 2 Through it you are saved, if you keep in memory what I preached to you, unless you have believed in vain.

3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: how Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 was buried, rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and was seen by Cephas, and then by the twelve. 6 Then He was seen by over five hundred brothers at once, of whom the greater part remain to this present time, though some have passed away. 7 Then He was seen by James and then by all the apostles. 8 Last of all, He was seen by me also, as by one born at the wrong time."

That theme, Christ's sacrificial death and raisin to pay for sin, is carried in John 3:16, the amazing verse that carries all five parts of the Gospel.

John 3:16 MEV "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life"

There are other verses which illustrate each of the points but basically:

God - God is Holy, the eternal Creator, forever separate from and greater than His creation

The World - Mankind is fallen in sin. All have sinned. Our sins have separated us from God. The wages of sin is death.

Only Begotten Son - Jesus Christ is 100% God and 100% man concurrently. God became a man, lived among us, died for all of our sins and rose again conquering death.

Whosoever believes - If we confess with our mouths and believe with our hearts that Jesus Christ is Lord, we shall be saved

Eternal life - If we receive Christ He lives in our hearts. Death has no sting. To be absent from the body then is to be present with the Lord.

Hi Ted,
Thank you! I've only read up to 1st Kings so far in the Old Testament and I'm still on Matthew in the New (someone told me not to just ready it thru from one end to the other; to instead, read a bit of the Old and a bit of the New so I just started with the New Testament not too long ago) I will jump ahead and read Corinthians!

Thanks for typing in. I appreciate it!!!

We start all over again on Jan 1st Treepose. Looking forward to going through the bible in a year along side you if possible. Merry Christmas!!

Absolutely! I am looking forward to following along a set reading plan; I printed the plan for the entire year so I can keep track and read it ahead of time and then listen to Brian's broadcast for a double-soaking-in of the scripture. I've made great strides in reading it on my own but I don't think I'm allowing it to marinate; it feels like I'm reading it just to get through it. So, the reading plan will feel like a good way to pace myself, read the entire Bible in a year AND actually study what I'm reading.

I am so excited!

I think I'll be starting my 4th year and I must say every year gets better than the last. Things become a little bit clearer... But it does take discipline especially (at least for me) the Old Testament. What God wants you to take away from each reading, will stick in your mind. God is so good!!!
