the hospital ministry is a great idea. when i was in icu for 2 1/2 weeks i saw what it was like for patients to be totally disconnected from the world. for those who are actually awake and coherent, there is little visitation time and no tv or radio. if the family brings in a radio or dvd player that is approved then there is some relief, but that was rare. even for patients on the regular floors, tv is not exactly the best babysitter for our souls, you know.
since my house was a crime scene my husband could not get inside to get my ipod, iphone, or laptop for about 4 days i think it was??? the day i remember waking up and seeing my first coworker visiting, i asked him to please bring me my bible from my office which he did. but i didn't have my glasses yet either so i couldn't read much plus tiny print. when i finally got my laptop i connected to the guest services wifi and started downloading the dab. I missed God's word so much.
people kept asking me how i could stand being without tv for over 2 weeks. i told them i d9on't watch it much anyway and prefer the bible, especially the DAB. God let me witness to some doctors, pastoral staff, and nurses about it all - the assault, the Bible, God's mercy, and the DAB all because i had access and time.
now, i am fortunate because God already planted me in the DAB garden and i eventually had the resources to reconnect. but for those that cannot read, do not have internet access, do not know about this podcast - but have nothing but down time to reflect on this trial in their lives, the DAB preloaded on an mp3 player would be the most comforting and healing tool in God's tool box of spiritual restoration.
i kinda like the idea of having the community news on their even if it isw old and the prayers too because it points to the uniqueness of this community God built - that their IS a family with a support structure that goes with the Word, that makes it a living, breathing ministry of hope and not just a dried up old reading of words. there are plenty of those to go around, but when you are hurting and feel like God has deserted you (even though He hasn't), when you are lying helpless in fear of the future, knowing that real people are there, praying and caring about you makes the true ministry of Jesus a reality in your world.
so, does anyone have a source for really cheap mp3 players in bulk?

Deb, Thanks for telling us those details about your experience. That means so much to me. I'm very happy to see you typing long posts again too! Your hands and fingers must be healing!
I found that refurbished MP3's are going to be the least expensive. But they may not come in a nice new box either. Depending on the way the MP3's are distributed, that may not be important.
For now I prefer the Sansa 2GB Clip. I like the style, reviews, battery life, ease of use and price. There are so many types of MP3 players out there, but I know how this one works

$20 each for a refurbished player with headphones and USB cord. That's the best price I have seen with a reputable company like Buy.com.
There are cheaper models out there. I prefer to give this model away because I'm not embarrassed by it's quality or style. All I need to do know is work on the nice looking box. I'll ask my wife - that's here department.

Deb,
In regards to this quote... "community news... and prayer... that makes it a living, breathing ministry of hope and not just a dried up old reading of words. there are plenty of those to go around"....
I have a concern about giving out January 2009 podcasts when it's October. On the one hand, it's a great starting place. But on the other hand, it's 9 months old! What am I going to give away in January of 2010? - Last year's January podcast?
What's your thoughts?

I wouldn't worry about this Craig. Actually its kind of neat to listen to the old podcasts and the sense of community is still there. I've been listening to last years podcasts this week and its been fascinating as it was the lead up to the election last year that now is just a distant memory but at the time was so paramount. Also, listening to the prayer requests at a different time just means more prayer going over the situation. Hope that helps :) Chris

I agree Joseph, the possibilities are endless! I love it Deb! Can you imagine every hospital in the US with an MP3 DAB program? Every childrens hospital and childrens wing with an MP3 DAB program?
Little update on my project. I have an email out to the director of the Childrens Hospital on how to get the ball rolling and haven't heard back. (I'm kind of a hyper guy. It's been 2 days and I'm wondering what the hold up is...lol) But an amazing thing is happening. I've told a total of 6 people on my team about the idea, asking for advice on how to make it a reality here and 4 out of the 6 have come up to me and said they want to contribute financially!! Please pray I have favor with the decision makers and will really be able to expedite this process. I would love to see this happen by Thanksgiving. I want them to have this available to them during this holiday season. Love y'all! Chris

Update: I just got great news!! The Children’s hospital just called and they have approved our MP3 player idea! So now we just need to get the ball rolling. It’s going to be pricier than I originally thought because we have to give the kids the MP3 players to keep (cross-contamination reasons), but I know God will provide. Please be praying for me and my fiance as we continue to work to make this a reality. thanks all!!
