I have been a christian for a long time but only in the past two years that i really learned about the fear of the Lord which to me it means to love and obey but in order to learn all this the Lord had to show me himself through a very bad financial time and my husband and i still going through it but he is faithful.

I think it is very hard to be afraid of someone as good as God is! He is the source of life, the source of salvation, the end of depression. But we can fear the absence of the Lord, or that something we might do might cause His displeasure or cause us not to feel close to him! Brothers and sisters lets do what Daddy wants us to do so that we don't run away from him for fear that he might spank us!
I fear that God will let me live for trivialities and that I won't live my life close to Him. As the deer longs for the water brook so my spirit longs for God. I know that if God is not present in my life, I will be as thirsty as a deer who cannot get a drink, even if my sinful self thinks it can get by with things that do not satisfy.

Hi^^ I'm Korean not american.. Even though i'm different with you(different culture, different language), I think we have same thing, that is loving god.... I'm so glad to meet you who are sons of god..^^
In my opinion, fear of god means that we have to respect god with accepting that all creations are made by god. I considered why solomon used 'fear'. He taking about wisdom in whole proverbs 1. How could he explain wisdom to us? I think because he received wisdom from god, he could know all wisdom came from god. before he received wisdom, he offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. It means by respecting god he received wisdom from god. So, i think respecting god is needed for wisdom. then, why he used 'fear' instead of 'respecting god'. I think 'fear' means that respecting god with accepting that all creations made by him and he ruled all things in world. It is different between just respecting god and respecting god with knowing his all almighty. When we know that all creatures made by god, we would feel fear of god because we feel great gap between almighty of god and lack of ability of human. So, i think solomon used 'fear' to mean that respecting god with accepting god is creater and ruler.

When the Bible speaks of 'fearing' the Lord, it has to do with honor and respect. When you think of it in that way it gives a new meaning. Remember, God's ways are not our ways. He wants us to respect that he owns everything in heaven and on earth, everything that was ever made, even power and honor come from Him alone. This is His world and we are to fear him as the wonderful creator who loves us exactly the way we are and desires for us to be in close communion with him. I agree with those who say that the fear of the Lord has to do with honor and respect, and I love the verse from Chronicles. I think we need to keep in mind even though we have a loving GOd that He is awesome in power and might, and that He is just. He does not hesitate to discipline those He loves and to pout judgment on those who reject Him. This is why we must still fear Him and why that fear is the beginning of wisdom. It reminds us to take all of these things seriously. I have been a believer for almost 50 years now and a serious follower for38 years and sometimes I just get glib and too easy going about my righteousness and my choices. This has been a good reminder for me that there are consequences to our choices and that God assures us we will reap what we sow, even as believers, we get the consequences of our choices. That is one of the main things that the book of Proverbs teaches us. Watch your choices, pursue God with all your heart and fear Him, avoiding the pitfalls that may draw you away from Him.

When I think about what it means to fear the Lord, it is not about running scarred of God, at least not for those us who are in relationship with Jesus Christ, for we are not under condemnation. Those who should be running scarred of God and his judgement in that sense of the concept of fear, those who are not in relationship with Jesus Christ, however are not, they see this as all foolishness. Paul in Romans works through the practical issues of what it means to work out our salvation and live in the Fear of the Lord, he higlights how much God loves, us - he sent his Son to die for us while we were still sinners, we are at peace with God now, but that does not mean we can go on knowingly continuing in habitual sin and think everything is fine and dandy - if we were to do so then we would not be living in fear of the Lord.
The Garden, before sin entered the world shows us what God had intended our relationshp with him to be and what it should be like for those in relationship with Jesus Christ. At this time , Adam and Eve were God's people, they we living in God's place, creation and specifically the Garden created in Eden for them with the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, and they were under God's rule. God was soverieign, they knew him as their creator, they worshiped him as creator and God had an initimate relationship with them, God came and walked in the Garden with them. God gave them dominion of the plants and the animals, everything in creation had been made for the benefit and enjoyment of Adam & Eve. God let them eat from the Tree of LIfe and so enjoy eternal life. He just didnt' want them to eat from the Tree of Knowledge. We could think of it this way, God was saying something to them along the lines of, trust me, acknowledge me in all your ways, recognize me as sovereign, worship me as creator and respect the order of things I have put in place - fear - Let me make the decsion about whats good and what's not good for you and things will go well for you.
Allowing God to resume his rightful place as sovereign, allowing Jesus Christ into our hearts as Lord of our lives, trusting him, acknowledging him in all our ways, dealing with the habitual sin in our lives that the Holy Spirit convicts us about, growing our relationship and understanding of God through prayer and the Word of God, setting apart our lives for God and being available to serve God through mininistering to the people God puts in front of us, whether it be in a more formal sense or simply caring for and showing the love of Christ to the people we come in contact with at the place they are at in their lives and needs. This is all part of honouring, respecting and Fearing the Lord. And I agree the Chronicles passage is a helpful one when thinking about this issue.
Our Fear of the Lord should be a healthy one that leads us to respond to God not as someone running scared of him, God created us to be in relationship with Him, remember the Garden pre-sin and think of the New Jersualem in the last few chapters of Revelation also, but as one who responds to him with honour, respect, awe and thanksgiving - in Worship of our Creator, trusting that God knows what is best for us.

Until we begin to believe that God says what He means and means what He says we don't fear Him nor do we respect or honor Him and I believe we are here on this earth to worship and honor Him.

I fear and respect the Lord because of his omnipotence and Love. He knows all about us, yet he still loves us, he cares for us, he guides us and he shows us grace and mercy everyday. To God be all Glory.
