Suggestions
Possible Future Mentor Groups
|
|
As the DAB community grows, and adds physical community resources like the DAB Windfarm cafe, might it be useful to consider setting up some sort of mentor classes or groups maybe 6 to 12 people, greeting new or newly active members, and giving a more personalized sense of community than is possible with the DAB community at large. I have seen this done in very large churches with Sunday Classes and it made an impersonal large group more accessible to individuals. It might be possible to have an automated grouping process, and would give more long term members feeling a call to be more active, a venue to do so.

What would this look like?

Based on how God has grown the community, it probably would have both a physical, and a virtual component. The group meeting at the cafe is probably too small currently to benefit from this grouping, but the virtual community is large enough to possibly use this type grouping. I am Basing this comment on the sense of being alone in the crowd that is so common in very large groups like a large church (over 1K). There appear to be numerous individuals in the DAB community that feel led to become more active in various ways. Group mentors might need to be vetted in some way by yourself or a mentor peer group of some sort, (just brainstorming here), and or have some sort of over-site, since they would represent DAB to the members of the group. If registered members indicated an interest in this, there could be a link, that would utilize a random number generator to assign them to an open group, up to a certain number. If they felt uncomfortable in that group for some reason, they could request re-assignment, which would re-generate a new number. You or other leadership could monitor re-assignment requests through some sort of reporting mechanism to identify potential problems in individual groups. The benefit of this process would potentially give individuals a sense of belonging that is not possible for some in a large open group.

all of these suggestions are cool and I would be interested in such a group mentorship format of some type but frankly if that is all it is.... the problem with our christian living is that we talk much and study the word of God at length, but..... people sit passively in churches sunday after sunday, month after month and then years etc. and in the end, many fall away from the church, the body of christ. the flame of love of many for Christ slowly deminishes to a bare, faint glow at best. ministers, pastors, preachers stand on stages and preach, preach and preach (to the converted I might ad) and we listen, listen and listen (and so we should), some falling asleep and/or minds wandering toward another reality as the preacher's voice fades into the far distance. Christ was an example to his disciples in WORD and DEED for 3 years. it took them a while to catch on, understand Christ, but more importantly, to walk in footsteps as it were, model His behavior; in WORD and in DEED and we are to do the same. anyone who has children knows how important day to day meaningful interactions with them are. children learn especially by seeing, doing and participating. a parent's behavior (negative or positive) has a great impact on his/her child, more so than talk if it does not mirror that behavior. it is often passed on from generation to generation as scripture teaches that as well. if we really want to mentor fellow christians and others, we must be able to demonstrate it in practical ways and come up with vehicles that bring that about, even here at BAB. in other words, it is time to show others the christian walk, not only discuss it, talk about it, hear about it and write about it. all of that we do very well. now let's think of practical ways that we all can model ourselves after and do just as well at it with the guidance of God, our Father.

I am always reminded of Christ's words: many are called, few are chosen. a somber statement I would say. anyone who has children knows how important day to day meaningful interactions with them are. children learn well by seeing, doing and participating. a parent's behavior therefor (negative or positive) has a great impact on his/her child and, more so than talk if it does not mirror that behavior. we know that behavioral dispositions are often passed on from generation to generation and scripture teaches that as well. if we really want to mentor fellow christians and others, we must be able to demonstrate it in practical ways and come up with vehicles that bring that desired christian behavior about, even here at BAB. in other words, it is time to show others the christian walk, not only discuss it, talk about it, hear about it and write about it. all of that we do here with passion, I am sure, and that is great. but now let's think of practical ways of being christians, behavior we can demonstrate ourselves and do it well. it is that DOING part that we need to do some brain-storming about and I think we can.
take care.
