Bible Questions and Spiritual Discussion

NIV vs KJV
I was listening to Kent Hovind, an awesome science teacher that gives facts for creation. In this Q n A video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRAnrMHU0hw&feature=BFp&list=PL312D357DCA76DAF0&index=20 he talks about translations of the bible. I if you look at these comparison charts, he's got a very valid claim.

I'm surprised to see that the NIV is lessoning the deity of Christ. I'm going to have to burn my NIV bible and go get a KJV...

Hi Jonathon,
I have always found the variations among scripture translations interesting. I apologize in advance for any inaccuracies as I studied this several years ago and am working from memory here...

The primary difference between most of the popular modern tranlations (like the NIV)and the KJV is the source documents that are used for translating the New Testament. The KJV uses what is known as the "Textus Receptus". The NIV, and many others, use other source documents, refered to as the "Nestle-Allen" manuscripts, that were discovered more recently, but appear to be older (i.e. closer to the original manuscripts in date). This implies less copies in between, and usually indicates greater accuracy. This is why these are used by most modern translators, even though they do not contain many phrases and individual words that later manuscripts contain.

Both sides of this contraversy have some convincing arguments. The supporters of the Textus Receptus claim that the Nestle-Allen texts were discarded because of their omissions, and that the later manuscripts were faithfully copied from earlier manuscripts. Supporters of the Nestle-Allen manuscripts claim that the church added certain phrases and words over the years to support their doctrines and authority, thus the older manusripts are closer to the original.

In the end, there is really no way to know which source documents are closer to the original, and considering the number of generations of copies that must have existed before even the oldest manuscripts, they may both contain many minor errors. We can only trust that God would keep the message intact over the years.

Personally I think one of the best ways to study the scriptures is in paralell. That is, get ahold of more than one translation, and to truly understand a passage, read it in multiple versions. There is an excellent website with tools that enable you to see a verse in quite a few translations at a time w(www.blueletterbible.org). This site also contains a variety of other study tools (such as dictionaries, lexicons, concordance, commentaries, etc.) all worked right into the text displayed as links you can click on for more information. I've found it quite helpful!

That's quite interesting. I tend to read from a variety of translations. I like the free E-sword computer bible which has many of them.

This site mentioned above certainly argues that NIV removed a lot of text... I is so biased though that it makes me wonder what the other side of the story is.

Looking forward to learning more,

Here's what we also know Peter. God says that false profits need to be killed. The NIV and other bibles seam to show contradictions because they have changed scripture to fit their understanding, however we know that these are not contradictions at all. The only bible that Christian's use to debate with is the KJV because it doesn't have any contradictions.

This should give us an idea as to which version is the Truth and which versions are false. no?

Oh my.. Not sure I'd take it that far, eh, Jonathon? Shall we burn all commentaries and other Christian books as well since they're not directly KJV? There is a lot of value in these things.
