"But Timothy has just now come to us from you and has brought good news about your faith and love. He has told us that you always have pleasant memories of us and that you long to see us, just as we also long to see you."

1 Thessalonians 3:6

Pleasant memories are just like precious snapshots in an old favorite photo album. Every once in a while you flip through them to recall warm and sunlit moments from your past.

Not long ago Ken and I were enjoying dinner in the home of a large family. Before the food was served, each child bowed his head and offered a short grace. I peeked when it came to little Mikey's turn to pray. As the youngest, he squirmed in his seat, and in between blessing the potatoes and roast beef, he prayed in a small voice, "God, help Joni help her handicapped friends."

Breathless with the tenderness of the moment, I quickly took a mental snapshot of Mikey sitting to the right of me with his eyes squeezed shut and hands folded. That brief prayer of his probably carried more impact before the throne than most of the things I ever pray.

That's one memory, sharp and clear, that I'm going to savor as I sit at my desk during a busy day. And the Lord will use it to lift my spirit. That's what pleasant memories are for.

Warm and lovely memories have a way of helping you live life better in the present. Think of the embrace of the friend who led you to Jesus. Recall the time in church when you cried as you sang a favorite hymn. Think back on a prayer meeting when the intercessions flowed so easily that you felt you could have prayed forever. Pick out a memory...and savor the sweetness.

Lord, please bring to mind encouraging and uplifting memories that help me see Your hand at work in my life over the years. I praise You today for thoughts that inspire and refresh.
