David Counting the People - A Big Deal!
Was anyone else struck by how big of a deal it seemed to be that David would count the people of the kingdom? I'm guessing it has something to do with arrogance or lack of trust in the Lord, but I was surprised at the intensity of God's response to David's sin here. Thoughts?

Hi Bryan,

It does seem like God is "overreacting" to what David did. But it's not so much about what David did in this case than that he disobeyed God's command to him to not take the census.

There is a time when God commanded the Israelites to take a census (the book we even name after it: the book of Numbers). So there is nothing intrinsically wrong about taking a census, it's just that God told him not to.

I have always thought David had it taken as a source of pride. Like, his kingdom was prosperous because of him instead of giving the glory to God. This would be placing himself above and taking credit for prosperity that came from God, not from him. Thoughts on this???
