The Fountain

"On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity."

Zechariah 13:1

One hot summer day when I was a little girl, my mother took me to the park. I remember a big fountain just over the hill from the zoo and arboretum. As we strolled by the fountain, I looked longingly as neighborhood children waded and splashed in the pool. I begged to join them and my mother did the most amazing thing--she let me.

We took off my shoes and socks and I splashed into the fountain with the other children. My shorts and shirt were soaked, but there we were, a bunch of giggling boys and girls with arms widespread and faces uplifted, squealing as the water showered on us from the fountain above. Our hearts were free. Exuberant. Uninhibited. Full of life and in high spirits.

A fountain is a place of joy. That's what I think of when I hear this hymn.

There is a fountain filled with blood

drawn from Immanuel's veins;

And sinners, plunged beneath that flood,

lose all their guilty stains.*

God has opened up a fountain to you through the Lord Jesus. He invites you to come on in and enjoy His love. Don't stand on the edges of His joy. He has washed away your sin and you, like a child, can be free and full of life.

O, to be like a child, relishing in the freedom and joy of all that Your love gives, Lord. Thank You for cleansing me from sin and washing away all my impurity. I lift my face and spread my hands in adoration of You.
