Rhinodad, Chet and Deanna, thanks for the replies. Doggcatcher corrected their app recently, but I am having trouble with the feed downloading now. I also contacted PocketCasts about another issue and have been waiting for their update for over a month.

I too am having this same issue. The problem is indeed the switch to m4a format which according to PocketCasts is a "video" format. While they support playing the audio track in this format, they do not support variable speed playback of m4a and THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY PLANS TO DO SO. So, as long as DAB continues to publish in this new format, we're stuck with 1x playback on android. :(
Does anyone have an alternate solution on android? I really love PocketCasts but am willing to switch. Like Deanna, I consider variable speed playback a "must have". At this point I see three possibilities:
1) I find an alternate app that supports variable speed playback of m4a format. No luck so far but I haven't given up yet.
2) DAB swaps back to the old format
3) I need to switch to a different audio bible podcast. I'd really hate to come down to this but its that important to me :(

I did some research since I found out the problem was the m4a format. The Doggcatcher app supposedly fixes the issue, but I received problems getting the daily updates with the feed. I did find an application on Android Playstore which works for me called Podcast Addict. There is a free version which has advertisements on it. You can pay $2.99 to eliminate the advertisements. It seems to handle the m4a format, downloads the feeds correctly, and manages variable speed format well.

Don't give up on Brian and Daily Audio Bible. This app seems to meet your (and my) requirements for listening. :)

Wow, Thanks Servant-Ken!! I just installed the app and the podcast and got to hear Brian at the frequency/timbre I'd gotten used to all year (until a couple of weeks ago!).
The interface of the app itself will take some getting used to, but I'm so happy to have a way that works that I'm hopeful I'll adjust.:-)

The latest update to Pocket Casts (as of March 10, 2015) appears to have fixed the issue.
