Days Like Grass...
Days Like Grass...

"The Lord knows the days of the upright, and their inheritance shall be forever."

Psalm 37:18 (NKJV)

It was one of those moments that stands out in memory with high-definition clarity. Former President Ronald Reagan had died on June 5, and now his body lay in a flag-draped casket in the Capitol rotunda.

Margaret Thatcher entered the rotunda, leaning on the arm of a senator. She walked slowly with a mature dignity, but she looked so frail. I held my breath as she neared the coffin, bowed her head, and placed her hand on the flag. One old warrior saying goodbye to another. Images of both of them flashed through my mind...so much younger...filled with courage, optimism, and seemingly boundless strength. And now, one was hardly a shadow of her former stalwart self, and the other had breathed his last. As I watched Mrs. Thatcher back away from the coffin, James 4:14 came to mind: "What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while then vanishes." And then another floated to the surface, Isaiah 40:7-8: "...Surely the people are grass. The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever."

Presidents and prime ministers--for all their charisma, power, and authority--come and go. But we who are in Christ are related to a Redeemer who will never age, never change, and who walks with us through all our days.

Where were you and what were you doing this time last year? Does it seem possible that an entire year has flown by since that time? Where do the years fly to? Our days may be like grass and our glory may fade like a flower, but, oh, that we might hold fast to the Word of Life, our precious Savior. May you and I press on to the high calling of Him better--much better--Christ Jesus, the Captain of our salvation and our mighty Warrior.

Lord Jesus, by Your Spirit who dwells within me, remind me to make the very most I can out of this twenty-four hours that lies before me.
