Nehemiah 11:1-12:26 ~ 1 Corinthians 10:14-33 ~ Psalm 34:11-22 ~ Proverbs 21:14-16
Okay, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. Today is August 16th. I'm Brian. It is wonderful to be here with you. We’ve got a brand new week stretching out in front of us and it is going to be a great one. Greetings from the north, from Michigan where we had a great time yesterday at the Heartbeat of Plymouth. I’ll be speaking today at the Penn Theatre here at the Heartbeat of Plymouth before returning to my home in the rolling hills of Tennessee. It has been a great time. Looking forward to today as well.

So we’ve got a brand new week and we pick up right where we left off yesterday, but we switch translations each week. This week we’ll read from The Names of God Bible. We have a couple days left in our journey through the book of Nehemiah.

Commentary:

A lot of Paul's writings are instructional writings, which is why they’ve become major portions of Christian doctrine. Paul writes a lot to churches, right? So he's like kind of giving the order of things, the shape of things, so he's often diving into a specific issue that is happening in a specific church, a specific faith tribe of people that have kind of bonded together and become followers of Jesus and he's giving instruction to them and to their specific situations. So we see that and we can compile that and then we get doctrine based around it for ourselves, instructional things for own behaviors.

So he is going through all the stuff – what you can eat, what you can’t eat, all this kind of stuff, but he does boil it down into something that encompasses the whole of what he is saying. It can get very, very tedious when we’re trying to write down this new law, this thing that Paul has said we’re free from, that old law. We can make a brand new one and then push them all together and try to sort out what are supposed to be the fences and ethics and morals around how it is we’re supposed to live our lives. That's fine but it’s really hard to do in the dynamic in life, just to go down a checklist every day to see how you measured up. So Jesus had a way of summarizing things that could connect.

So like when he says, “Listen, the way people are going to know that you're mine is by the way you love one another, that's how this will work.” That summarizes a book of rules and Paul does exactly that today. He's saying, “Look, whatever it is you eat or whatever it is your drink or whatever it is you do, do everything to the glory of God.” That sums a book full of rules up into one encapsulated thing because it gives us the ability to simply say, “Can I do this to the glory of God? Can I say this to the glory of God? Can I carry this offense? Can I jump into this situation? Can I make this decision or can I hold this posture of heart to the glory of God?” What immediately rises up within us is the answer to that question.

The big reframe here is that when we are in a relationship with somebody, the rules become apparent. When we are in a relationship with God, the things that govern that relationship, they become bigger issues. I will not do something that will break the heart of the one that I love. I can’t do that to the glory of God.

So as we enter this new week, may that…I mean, I'm not big into mantras, but may that be the thing that sort of loiters, that thing that sort of stays with us, on our minds as we navigate through all of the drama of the week ahead. And by drama I don’t mean bad things. I mean life is this story waiting to be unfolded and we have no idea all the little nuances that we’ll face this week as we enter into those things, walking with the counsel of the Holy Spirit. May we be cognizant, may we be aware and alert. Can I step into this to the glory of God? And if I do step into this or if I get into that conversation, if I press into this or if I do this, how do I do it to the glory of God? That becomes a bit of a north star and it orients us to our true north and helps us to navigate correctly.

Prayer:

Jesus we invite you into that. We watched you do it in the gospels. You have given us of your spirit. It is possible. It is just not possible in and of ourselves. It is not possible in our own strength. We can’t do it without walking with you in it. So we invite your Holy Spirit to come and guide us into all truth. This was your promise. Make it readily on our minds. Is what I'm about to do or say or think something that I can enter into to your glory? Help us, Jesus, we pray. In your precious name, amen.

Community Prayer Requests and Praise Reports

Hello family. This is Janice in Hot Springs, AR and I was listening today, the 11th of August, and I heard a gal, a sweet gal sounding a little bit freaked out about living with a ghost at her brother's house and not being able to pay her doctor's bill. I felt her pain and I felt that she was really frustrated. Sweetie, I just want to tell you that you have probably 10 million people willing to get out there and send up prayers and get rid of whatever is spiritual and dark that is anywhere near you. We can do that. Get with a local church and have them pray for you, with you, and go to the doctor's office or call them and just explain to them that you were having a freak-out moment and that you will pay them. Make a payment arrangement with them. That is all they really want to know. Yeah, you're not going to go to jail, honey. Whoever was doing that, that must have been just to get your attention. Love you and I’ll be praying for you and call back and tell us your name and how things turned out because I know it will turn out quite well. Okay sweetie, take care. Bye-bye.

Hi family. It's Drew from the Bay Area, Andrew, just calling in today asking for prayer for my son, Drew Jr. I also wanted to pray for Andrew in Southern California. Let's do that first. Heavenly Father, you are such an awesome God. Lord, Daddy, you're the creator of all things and we know that you only want good things for Andrew and that you have a purpose because your Word says that all things come together for good for those who are called according to your purpose. Lord, we know that you only have good things in store for Andrew. In fact, saving his daughter miraculously from that fall that she took was a wakeup call. Father, we lift you up and we say you deserve all praise and all glory. So thank you, Lord God, that you're working in Andrew's heart. You’re working in my heart and in my son's heart. We thank you. In Jesus’ name. I also want to pray for my son, that he would come to church. I'm deeply sad and disturbed. I'm grateful for everything that God has done, but it doesn’t seem to be working well. I lost my mother and my brother, my wife, my ex-wife, my daughter. My son came back to me and now things don’t seem to be going the right direction. So I told him today that he could find another place to live and he got a degree and he's working on a second degree, but I just can’t handle the shouting. So pray for me, family, and for my son. Love you guys. Alex, praying for you too. Love you. Bye.

Good morning Dabbers. This is Andrew from Southern California. It's August 12th and I am calling back in to not only thank you for your prayers from my first call a few weeks ago, but also to continue to ask for your prayers. I had mentioned I lost my brother last year. He was murdered for helping a homeless person, defending a homeless person. Well, his trial begins today. They weren’t very optimistic enough that the person would get a life sentence. They wanted us to settle, but his wife __________ him to go through the trial and I'm leaving it all in God's hands. Only he knows the judgment he wants to place and I have extreme faith in his Word and I know my brother will have some justice. So please pray for me for peace, and my family for healing. We’re still going through a very troubling situation. Also I would like to reach out to Alex. I know you called in a while ago and you’ve had a lot of people praying over you. I just want to say, brother, the fact that you even found Daily Audio Bible and that you called in should speak volumes. Listen to everything everybody has been saying. I know you say you're agnostic, but something is pulling your soul towards this community. I do believe that is your Father so just have faith, have trust and just slowly start putting yourself into his Word and you will see doors open up that you can’t even imagine. I love you all and I thank you for your continued prayers and I continue to pray for each and every one of you. Take care.

Hello fellow Dabbers. This is Wayne from Maine calling. I wanted to call in and talk to Abbie. On July 11th, Abbie from New York, you had left a prayer request about your parents and about finding a life partner. You are in my prayers, my dear. Also on July 11th there was a lady that called in that had walked out on a doctor's visit and is freaking out, understandably so. My dear, I would recommend you go back into the doctor's office, tell them that you don’t have the money to pay and you can work out a plan, but go in and confront them. Don’t run away from this. I want you to email me. My email is WHTMTNS@gmail.com. And lastly, July 12th, __________, first-time caller, you seemed a little bit nervous about calling, but I want to congratulate you on calling, getting out of your comfort level and making that call. You are in my prayers, my friend. May God richly bless you in your walk with Christ. Guys, let's all act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God. This is Wayne from Maine. Cheers.

Hello everyone. This is Blessed Daughter of God in Sacramento. I have been listening to the Daily Audio Bible for a while, although this is my first time calling ever. It has just been incredible to be a part of this family and I wanted to thank you all for loving everyone, accepting and praying for our family. I just wanted to call because I heard a prayer for Baby Caden just now. Today is the 12th of August. I am praying for Baby Caden. I just pray that God will put his healing hands to heal this baby. And I also wanted to pray for his mom Nicole, that she will be consoled through all this. And I also heard a prayer from…I wrote down his name, but he is a brother from Nevada and he said that he is having financial difficulties. You really tugged at my heart. Please know that God is a God of provision and he will take care of you. Okay, just take care everybody and I pray for everyone every time I hear you guys’ phone calls. I always pray for you all. Thank you. Bye-bye.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family. This is Ron from Upstate New York calling with an update. My wife has mostly healed. There is some bruising still left in her foot, but she is out of the boot. She has been out of the boot for a while now and she is walking. But there is still a little pain. My daughter is scheduled for her stomach operation on the 1st of September, so if everybody would pray on that day, please. My mom has gone to be with the Lord as of August 3rd. It was a hard thing to watch her go downhill so quickly, but God is good always. I want to thank everybody that has prayed on the line and those that pray in the background silently like I do a lot. I want to thank everybody. This is Ron from Upstate New York, __________ on the northern New York front. Delta Alpha Foxtrot, God bless you.

Hi everybody. This is Sally from Massachusetts. Please, let's pray. Heavenly Father, we come to you from all over the world joining as a community to pray for one another. Father, we lift up people who call in asking for prayer requests and offering support and we praise you, Lord, for people calling in with praise reports. Lord, we pray for the people who call in and their petition is not heard by us but you hear it, Lord. You know what is being asked and we pray for the people who don’t call in but they pray together with us. Holy Spirit, please fill us with your presence and pray for things for our brothers and sisters that we do not know what to pray for, asking things that we do not know to ask for with groanings that cannot be uttered. Father God, we praise you for who you are and all that you are. Lord, we thank you for the blessing, for the restoration, for the healed wounds and for the jobs that you provide for us. And we hear you, Lord, when you say this is the way, walk in it. Help us to recognize your voice when you speak to us. We pray for this in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen. God bless you all.
