Isaiah 51:1-53:12 ~ Ephesians 5:1-33 ~ Psalm 69:19-36 ~ Proverbs 24:7
Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. Today is the 27th day of September and greetings from Fort Smith, AR, where I’ll be spending some time speaking this morning and this afternoon at First Presbyterian Church here. I’m looking forward to it. I think I mentioned this once like a few weeks ago, like I was on my way here a little over a year (I guess about a year and a half ago) when I got into this bad car accident that just shattered my foot and caused me to have to relearn a lot of things that I am still relearning about walking. So being here has been a long time in the making and it’s good to be here. It’s good to be here as we greet a new week all over the world together as this beautiful family that we are and so we’ll dive into this shiny new week, reading from the Easy To Read Version this week.

Commentary

Okay, I can’t pass Ephesians 5 without just pointing out what I… I mean there are a few things every year that I like to bring up and there are so many new things that I’m experiencing new in the scriptures. This husband and wife thing is so important, so vital because, I mean, I kind of grew up thinking that men were over women; and my dad didn’t demonstrate like a domineering thing, but I just thought, well, men make the final decision and that’s because they’re just stronger, and I don’t know, maybe subtly kind of somehow better in some sort of weird way. And then these scriptures would come up, like this is the order of the family. This is kind of how things are supposed to look, and as true as all of that might be, there are like some really important things to see here.

Paul did talk to wives and invite them to respect their husbands, no doubt about it; but that wasn’t like a blank check. Right? I mean like he just didn’t hand men this blank check by telling women they’ve got to serve and respect their husbands. He spent way more time dealing with the men and inviting them to be respectable, and even beyond respectable, to be willing to be as Christ is for the church. That is an unbelievably high calling. Christ laid his life down and died for the church. So whereas, I kind of always took this Ephesians 5 thing as, I don’t know, as really more pointed toward the women, it is far more pointed at the men. And, you know, I got one wife and I know her pretty well and I know what she does and does not respect and I believe her feminine heart is very similar to all feminine hearts. If you’ve got somebody laying their life down for you, you respect them. This thing works hand and hand. It doesn’t work when it’s lopsided in either direction.

So it’s true, women, that what your men need is your respect; that you call out in him what is noble; that you put your trust in him to take care of you and maybe that’s been a hard things to do. Maybe it’s been a rough road. What have you done with that? If you turn away from serving as Christ, then it exacerbates the problem.

And men, if you’re not laying your life down for your woman, then there’s not a whole lot to respect there. If you’re not loving her, caring for her, protecting her with your very life, what does she have to respect? When these two things come together, though, respect and love and laying down your life for each other, when these things come together, and both husband and wife are equally pouring into the relationship, this is unstoppable. Literally, there is like nothing that can come between you or against you that can separate you, except death. It’s unstoppable.

So when Paul kind of plays out this balance, it’s very important. If we would just live into this, so much would just go away. If we realized it’s a problem that we’re fighting, it’s an issue that we’re fighting, it’s not each that we’re attacking, if we stop trying to recreate each other in the image of what we want or what we think we need and allow each other to be individual human beings that are pulling our lives together to become one thing, one more powerful thing, one indestructible thing on this earth, maybe at minimum we’d have a better go at life; but at its maximum, there is no force that can shake what we could be together.

So may we just be reminded once again and maybe it’s a good point in the year to sit down and have a talk, just an honest talk. Like, we can come in to conversations that could be testy, like can be booby-trapped with all of our defenses up and all of our accusations cocked and ready, all of our armament ready to go, or we could come and like lay it all down and come defenseless to each other and have a talk. Maybe it’s time.

Prayer

Father, we invite you into this. We invite you into all of this because without you there is no hope, anyway. And we’re not going to get it right anyway. But with you, with you as the head of all of this, with you surrounding it, there’s no end to the healing and restoration that you are capable of. You are capable of resurrecting the dead. So there’s no problem that we’re facing that you can’t be involved in and help us navigate through if we will first surrender to you and lay our weapons down that are aimed at each other. Come Holy Spirit, we need you always. We need you now and we invite you. Pray this in the precious name of Jesus, amen.

Announcements

Www.DailyAudioBible.com is home base, it’s the website. It’s where you find out what’s going on around here. Of course, what’s going on around here today is that I’m in the wonderful state of Arkansas and looking forward to the time at First Presbyterian today and then getting to head home later this week.

Toward the latter part of the week, October 1st will arrive. October 1st is the official release date of Reframe – even though Amazon jumped the gun, which made Barnes & Noble jump the gun, and so some of you are already deep into Reframe, and some of you have already read it, and some of you are still kind of waiting – October 1st is the date where it is everywhere and the official launch date and I’ll be speaking in Nashville at the Story Conference, briefly, but then, actually two weeks from today, the 11th of October, we really launch into the Reframe tour, not that we haven’t been talking Reframe for a while, but this all kind of kicks off in Spring Hill, TN. Nashville, home town. And so Nashville, I expect you to represent because I never really had the chance to meet you. I’ve been like all over the place but never really got the chance to meet you. And I know our town (Nashville can be like this, ‘yeah, whatever’) because so much is going on here, but I’d love to meet you, really would. I’ll be speaking at SouthView Church in Spring Hill, TN. Their website is www.Southview.cc. You can get more information there. I very much look forward to that.
And then we kind of kick in. The week after that, I will be in Charleston, SC, that’s the 18th. Then the 25th, Richland, WA. November 1st, we’ll be in Louisville, KY. November 8th, Chattanooga, TN. November 15th, in the San Diego, CA, area. And so we kind of unpack all that where and when and stuff. You can find it at www.DailyAudioBible.com in the itinerary. And that’s going to be fun. Looking forward to it. It’s going to be a lot of travel but it’ll be fun before we kind of break for Christmas. So looking forward to seeing you all out on the road.

If you haven’t had a chance to get a copy of Reframe yet, there’s still time to get into all the stuff that we’re giving away. Go to www.Reframebook.com. All that ends at the end of September; so certainly do go grab a copy of Reframe. We’re going to have some fun things coming up in October that we can do together virtually, like pulling us into community together. It’s going to be a lot of fun; which leads me to remind you if you haven’t got the Periscope app yet, go get it. (I know some of you are like ‘I don’t even know what Periscope is.’) If you have a smartphone or a tablet or whatever, just go to your app store and search for Periscope. It’s a free app. Just download it and when you do download it, then follow Daily Audio Bible. Just search for Daily Audio Bible and follow. And then when we start doing some live interactive things, we can do it together.

Alright, if you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, you can do that at the website, www.DailyAudioBible.com and there’s a link in the upper right-hand corner of the home page. And if you would click that link, I would be grateful. Thank you for your partnership. If you prefer, the mailing address is P.O. Box 1996, Spring Hill, TN 37174.

And as always, if you have a prayer request or comment, (877) 942-4253 is the number to call.

And that’s it for today. I’m Brian. I love you. I’ll be waiting for you here, tomorrow.

Community Prayer Requests and Praise Reports

Good morning. Good evening everybody. This is Suzie. I know I don’t call very often but I’m praying for you as I hear your prayers. And I first wanted to say thank you to Brian and Jill and the team for Promised Land. Oh, it’s so beautiful and Brian’s messages and commentary make the places of the bible just come alive. Just connecting the stories to the places that we share about in the bible is pretty amazing. Anyhow, if you haven’t gotten one, get it now or as soon as you can. I have written down here Sherry C. from the 18th and I don’t remember, Sherry, I didn’t write down what it was, but I just ask you, God, lift Sherry up and you know what her prayers are, Lord God, what your request is. So I just ask you, Lord God, to give her comfort, give her clarity, provide for whatever it is that her needs are, Lord God. And for the lady who requested prayer for her vision, I also ask, Lord, that you touch her, Lord God. Touch her eyes, Lord God, and clear up her vision so that she can see you physically; not see you, but see physically, Lord God. You’ve healed the blind when you were here and I just ask you for this lady, Lord God, to intercede for her and give her vision back to her. For the husband who called, that was played on the 21st, asking for prayer for his wife who has Lyme disease who is in a great deal of pain and now the medicine that she has been taking…

Hello DAB family, this is Mark from Sydney, Australia. This is my second time calling and I wish to pray for myself. This is going to be very quick since I only have two minutes to talk. Brian, you are right, one year in the Bible will change everything. I was a check box Christian, checking off the boxes for nightly prayer, going to mass, and giving up my time and treasure, while my heart was far from God. I thought of myself as a good Christian. Unfortunately, about 6 years ago, I went through a very nasty divorce and __________. God sent me to the desert to remold me. He graciously led me into contact with many good Christians that have helped me over the past 6 years to reframe my whole thinking of Christianity. Indeed, it was the last 12 months with DAB that has transformed me from a check box Christian into a man longing for a relationship with his Creator. I have realized that I’m still an island trying to do everything by myself and not asking anybody for help, which is why I’m calling. God has graciously given me a vision a few months ago telling me he was ready to take me back up to Mount Nebo and show me my Promised Land, but I needed to do one thing for him. He needs to talk to my ex-wife and to reach out and express my God-filled remorse in my part of the breakdown of the marriage. I’m feeling like one of the 12 spies that Moses sent out to survey the land of Canaan and report back on. I’m paralyzed with fear of being judged, fear of being wrong, fear of being rejected. Such a simple thing God has asked me to do, but I feel like I’m asked to pass through a mountain. Please my DAB family, pray for these 3 things for me. One, for the courage to quickly arrange the time and talk with my ex-wife; two, that my ex-wife will accept my invitation; and three, that I have the wisdom of Solomon in my words at the meeting, that I will say the right thing. My DAB family, I’d love to say more but my time is really up. Joe the Protector, thank you, you did answer one of my calls the other day and I really appreciate that. Thank you for praying for these ones. My two minutes is up, so thank you all, I love you all.

Hello, this is Carla from North Carolina. I called simply just to thank you to Vicky from California for reaching out to me and giving me advice. I want to thank Daily Audio Bible and the whole family for your prayers, but especially to Biola. I listened to her this morning when she called and she sung ‘When you cry,’ even though Biola said she didn’t have much of a voice, it was the spirit that was there that moved me and I appreciate it so much. It touched my heart and it was at the point where I felt like God didn’t hear me cry but I know he does. He says the bible with me because he spoke this morning. And I thank you and I praise God for you.

Hi Daily Audio Bible family, this is Mike from San Clarita. I want to lead us in a group prayer for everyone that calls into the Daily Audio Bible with prayer requests and for everyone that listens and does not call in. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, deliver us from evil. Lord, especially keep in your heart Debra and Warren from California. Warren is suffering from some hostile work situation. We ask that you give him peace and comfort and help him to open his eyes to the situation that he’s in and to apply your love into all his dealings that he has at work and your will would be done. Sarah, Lord also keep in your heart Sarah from Canada. Her kids’ dad, this separation problems with court proceedings and her daughters now living with him, just give her the comfort and strength. Sarah, just look to God for guidance. He knows that he will protect you and your daughter and give you the comfort that you so need. We ask these things in Jesus’ name, amen.

Hi family, its Drew. Let’s just pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you that you are holy, that you sent your Son for us. Lord, we ask you being in your holiness that we can come to you by the blood of Christ. We’re so thankful and we come today to ask you what we should ask you every day and that’s to fill us with the Spirit, Lord. We know we’re already believers. Lord, forgive us our sins. Forgive us our thoughts. Forgive us our pity and our fears. Oh, Lord let us trust in you. Let us not be deceived by temptations of this world and the things. Let us know be double-minded in watching things that we should watch, listening to things that we shouldn’t listen to, spending our time soaking ourselves in alcohol and drugs and movies and lust. Lord, forgive us. I ask that you would help us to walk in this world. Help us to be free of these things. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

Hey, good morning Dabbers, it’s the 24th where I am. My name is Richard C. from Albury-Wodonga. I need someone to pray for me. I’m sorry, I need someone to intercede for me because I’m fearful of my enemies. The story is that with foster care, me and my wife Nicole are foster carers and my three foster sons have been taken from us. It’s almost been 40 days, over 5 weeks since I have seen them and my wife only gets to see them for an hour. And I know they want to be with us; but now the people from the foster care agency are writing lies about us and making it harder for us to be able to get the boys back. And I’m certainly no saint, it’s because of me that the boys have been taken off us but Psalms 51 says that my sins are before you and you alone. So I’m prayerfully coming to God and hoping in him and trusting him for his forgiveness and his restoration, his grace and his mercy. That every single, there’s been court cases and reviews and all these things happening and at every single point, all the doors are shutting and so I’m trying very hard to be faithful to God but all the doors are shutting. I need God to step in. I need God’s grace. I need his grace and his mercy to be extended to me and my family, so my family and I can be restored. My boys can be sent back to me. I don’t know what else.

Good afternoon, DAB family, this is Laurie in Bakersfield, CA. It’s okay to apologize for not calling in sooner, especially when a praise report is due, and I apologize. I’m a better writer than a speaker, so calling is not my favorite thing to do. I listen to and pray for every request as I am so heartbroken, empathetic and even encouraged by the efforts of all who call in. I last called in December, this meant my prayer request was only out there for a very short time and less people actually heard it played. Pastor Gene heard it and mentioned it; which assured me that others had heard too. I know God heard. For a quick recap, I had called about my youngest son, Nick, twice. The first time I called was a few years ago and it was about a job while he was away at college. Last December, I called because he had returned home after one year and within a year later began having seizures. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor and it’s been quite a journey. God’s biggest miracle has been the relationship Nick now has with his loving Father. Nick’s positive attitude and faith have been an inspiration to many. Removing the tumor was the treatment recommendation and after a few delays due to Nick’s health, it was finally done on July 23rd. Even after the brain tumor was removed, we had the news that it was cancer. Nick will need close monitoring for the rest of his life and he must take anti-seizure meds, but he is well today, back to work, and his soul is in relationship with Christ. For those of you with prodigal children, sick children, or any unsaved relatives, take hope in this, that God does have a purpose for your trial. There may be nothing you can do but pray but God has a plan and our attitude of faith and rest in God’s plan can make all the difference in the situation and that person. Thanks for your prayers and praise God for what he has done. God bless.
