Jeremiah 23:21-25:38 ~ 2 Thessalonians 2:1-17 ~ Psalm 84:1-12 ~ Proverbs 25:15
Today is the 14th of October. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. How are you, here in the middle of the month of October? Is it getting sweater weather where you live? Or are you taking the sweaters off because now it is spring time now because you’re in the southern hemisphere? Which is also cool, bizarre to me, but cool. It’s still pretty temperate here in the rolling hills of Tennessee. But autumn is certainly starting to peek, show itself. So, not that that has to do with anything, but it’s good to check in with each other once in a while. Hope it’s a wonderful, wonderful day – morning, noon, or night – wherever you are. So we’re reading from the International Standard Version and we are in the book of Jeremiah.

Commentary

Alright, so as we work our way through Jeremiah, let’s remember that he’s been doing this for a couple of decades. So, a pretty long time he’s been warning people about what their path is going to lead them to if they don’t get off that path and turn around and go the other way. So now over two decades some of this stuff has started to come true and now the king of Babylon has taken a bunch of people into exile, and Jeremiah has this dream (right?) where there are these two fig baskets and one of the fig baskets are good, really good figs, and the other are really, really bad figs. And the really good figs represent the people who have actually been taken into captivity and God speaks to those people who have been taken into captivity:

I’ll look at you with good intentions. I’ll bring you back. I’ll build you up. I won’t tear you down. I’ll plant you. I won’t rip you up. I’ll give you the ability to know me because I’m the Lord and you’ll be my people and I’ll be your God when you return to me with all of your heart.

What’s important is kind of a set up for what’s coming a little bit later, like shortly, because we’re going to hit one of the most famous passages in the scriptures in the last few years when we get to the 29th chapter of Jeremiah (right?), the one that’s:

I know the plans that I have for you.

Well, he’s speaking to these same people. So he’s making a differentiation about who went into exile and who remained and stayed rebellious, even though they got to stay in their own land. He’s reaching out to the marginalized ones that have been enslaved and taken away already here and he’s going to speak directly to them. And there are some poignant things once we get there that we’ll talk about, but he’s already talking to those specific people in our reading today.

And then, man, we get to the psalm today and I love this psalm because it describes the posture of heart that I long to live in always (right?). I mean life has its own shape and we’re all emotional beings and so we have to deal with whatever comes our way and we respond to it in certain ways, but this posture of heart that is described in the psalm, this is where I want my heart to live because the psalmist is basically saying;

Wherever You are, that’s where I want to be. That’s what I long for. That’s what my body and soul long for, to be wherever You are. And how lucky are the people that get to do that (he says). I’d rather be outside of wherever You are. Even if I can’t get into the building (of course he’s referring to the temple), even it’s too full, even if there’s no access, even if I can’t get in there, even if I can just stand outside the building where You are, I’d rather be there for one day than spend a thousand days somewhere else. I’d rather be outside just near You, as close as I can get and just be there than live in the tent of wickedness. Because You’re the sun and the shield. You’re the one who grants grace and favor. You’re the one who won’t withhold any good thing from those who walk with this posture, who walk blamelessly. How happy are those who fully trust in You.

Man, I want that to be my life, always, every moment of every day, every second (right?), every microsecond, that’s where I want to be. I want to trust completely.

The thing is the only thing that gets in our way from maintaining this posture of heart is ourselves. Most of the time we will blame exterior circumstances that we’re facing. We’re facing something that we can’t see the other side of and we’re headed into a storm or a hardship or a trial or whatever and it just becomes gray. And then we lose connection and we’ll intellectually try to stay in a place of trust, but what we’re really starting to do is thrash about, trying to figure out how we’re going to show up for ourselves and get out of the storm when it is actually unnecessary and we cause a lot of damage to ourselves and those around us in those times because we’re just thrashing around. And in our honesty we can say, ‘I just don’t know what’s going on. I don’t know what God is up to. I don’t know what He’s doing.’ And yet, with this posture of heart, we know that whatever He’s doing is good. He will not withhold any good thing. He grants grace and favor. And what would God need to also do to prove that’s who He is? He came here and died to rescue us. What else does he need to do to show his trustworthiness? There’s nothing else we would require of anyone to trust them, and yet we’ll thrash about, make a mess of things, blame God for it, find ourselves estranged, find ourselves in the tent of wicked.

Even if I have to be outside the building (right?), where He is, in the courtyard, that’s better. Just one day is better than a thousand anywhere else. Just to be in that place where there is complete trust in the exterior circumstances or storms of life. They just are what they are, but the outcome is assured, grace and favor, good things, if we will simply walk blameless. If we will simply walk with God and trust Him and enter into relationship with Him, then it’s like this soft cocoon. We are surrounded on all sides by the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

What things look like are not what is real. They’re not the end of the story. We just get so caught up in the seasons of our lives and aren’t able to zoom out and see that there’s a lot going on here. When we look back, we can see God, God invading into everything he’s allowed to touch. We can also see the places that we’ve forbidden him access and what that leads to in our lives.

If we can just maintain this posture of heart, we’d be so much more productive in the Kingdom. We would be so much more at rest inside of ourselves. And this is available.

Prayer

So Father, we come into your presence, kind of asking for your help. We ask for the power of Your Holy Spirit to draw us near. We ask for your forgiveness for all of the thrashing around that we do, all of the mistrust that we hold against you. We want the simple posture of the faith of a child, full and complete trust that anything is possible, because anything is possible with you. Nothing is impossible with you. And so we lay aside our agendas. We lay aside our expectations, these little measuring rods that we hold You to, to measure whether or not You’re showing up for us, according to our will and our purpose when it’s totally backward. We want to walk blameless and that be the measuring rod that you hold against us, that we are with you in relationship. And we set aside our agendas, knowing that trusting you is the safest thing we can possibly do in this life. So come Holy Spirit, we pray, in Jesus’ name, amen.

Www.DailyAudioBible.com is home base. It is the website where you find out what is going on around here and this pretty cool thing going on with LifeWay. So, we have the Reframe Films that we released and you can get those at www.ReframeBook.com, but you can get those free if you’ll kind of form a group or distribute copies of Reframe to people that you love, people that you can interact with about it and stay in the message together with. We’ll send you the Reframe Films free. So if you get 7 copies of Reframe, we’ll send you the DVD and give you access to download the films right away. All you got to do is email your receipt to Reframe@DailyAudiobible.com. So if you go to your local Christian bookstore or Barnes & Noble or whatever, then just take a picture of the receipt and e-mail it to Reframe@DailyAudioBible.com. If you get it online, then just forward the receipt and we’ll get you hooked up. If you get 10 or more, we will also give you another Reframe book, only this one’s a signed first edition copy and we’ll mail it all to you for free. You don’t even have to pay postage. We’re picking it all up.

LifeWay, which is a retail chain here in the United States (and they have like 200 stores, 180 stores, something like that, all of the country, so there may be one in your neck of the woods), they also have an online store, they’ve got Reframe for 50% off this week, which is pretty sweet. Perfect time to stock up, perfect time to take advantage of this. So there is a link at www.ReframeBook.com to all the retailers, but to LifeWay and if you click it, ‘Bam!’ you’re there. You can get it, but you can also just stop in at your local Christian bookstore and grab your copies and we’ll hook you up. It’s pretty cool. Very grateful to LifeWay for doing this. So let’s take advantage of it.

Okay, other Reframe things. What else do we have going on? This Thursday, which is tomorrow, at 7:30 p.m. (Central Standard Time) will be our 2nd Periscope, our large small-group. We had a blast last week, so I’m sure we’ll have a blast this week. We’ll be doing that at 7:30 p.m. (Central Standard Time) in the United States. So you just kind of sort that out where that is wherever you are and we will go live and have a nice conversation and interaction about Reframe tomorrow night.

This coming Sunday, which is the 18th, Reframe will come to Charleston, SC. Www.DanielIslandFellowship.org is where you can get the address and service times. Looking forward to that.

And then next weekend, the 25th, I’ll be in Richland, WA, in the Tri-Cities, way out west at Columbia Christian Church (C3) and their website is www.FamilyFaith.com. You can get the address there. So, looking forward to seeing you out on the road over the next several weeks.

Community Prayer Requests and Praise Reports

Hey Dabbers, this is Slave of Jesus in North Carolina. Alright, Holy Spirit, let’s roll. Lord, we ask you to watch over the Kirby family. We ask you to give them a hedge of protection and then bring joy and happiness into their life, in Jesus’ name, amen. I went to something the other day. A guy named Kevin H., but I just listened to his presentation. So, he jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge and lived, but he felt that he had to do that. And what I found interesting in the discussion was, he says the second he jumped over the railing, the second he did it, he had regrets, that he wanted to live. And he had about 4 seconds and he went through ‘Oh my God’ and the last thing he said before he hit the water was ‘God, please save me.’ And then after he hit the water, he had cracked his back and broken his leg and he was treading water (and if you know anything about the water out there in San Francisco, there are currents that you can’t even swim in any direction) and again he was praying out loud ‘God help me.’ I’m interested to see about the story, but he didn’t even focus on that, he almost just mentioned that as a passing glance, speaking out loud, as we say, possibly saved his life. I think it’s a great story that he’s coming out. He is thinking how the enemy puts things in your head. Now he doesn’t talk about this, but I’m excited to read that story. I don’t know, I just thought that was really cool. So if there is anyone out there who’s struggling, his biggest message is if you ever have the thought about killing yourself, you got to speak up to someone. That entire day, he was in tears. He saw his dad. He was in tears on a bus and no one said a word to him. Nobody said like ‘hey, are you okay?’ And he even put this in his thoughts, ‘if somebody says ‘are you okay?’ I’m not going to do it.’ And right before he jumped, a person came up to him – he had kind of been in tears, pacing 40 minutes and then walked up to him and he thought ‘okay, this is the person and if she says, ‘are you okay?’ I’m not going to do it’ and the person handed him her phone in her foreign accent and asked ‘could you take a picture of me?’ He took about 4 pictures and it was after that he jumped. So if you see someone in trouble today and in tears, do not hesitate. The Holy Spirit should prompt you. Do not hesitate. Just go up and ask them ‘are you okay?’ I love y’all. Have a great day!

Hello Daily Audio Bible. This is Vince from Granite Falls, WA and I had an observation I just wanted to share. Out here in eastern Washington, we’ve had a lot of fires, wildfires. This smoke was immense out here earlier this summer. And one morning on my way to work, I noticed the sun rising and it was just the most spectacular. I mean the colors were indescribable, the beauty was awe inspiring. It was amazing. I pulled off the side of the road to watch the sun emerge from the horizon and it truly affected me. Got back in my pickup and headed off to work and reflected on that all day long and it just reminded me (I know there’s a lot of people out there that have wayward children that are in a dark place in their life) and just gave me the hope (and I hope it gives you hope) that even though there’s darkness around them, consider their emergence, consider the sun shining through them. Look forward to that day. Well, that was my thought. Anyhow, I hope somebody takes home something from that. I want to say a shout-out to my wife, Cammie, and friend, Brad. Anyhow, you all have a good day. Love you. Bye.

Hi Daily Audio Bible family, this is Cindy from South Florida. I’ve been listening for more than 3 years, but this is my first time calling in. I don’t always listen to all of the prayers at the end of the podcast, but today I’m so glad I did. The last 3 callers touched my heart in a profound way. Scott’s message to the struggling caller spoke to my heart, that we have the choice of what we think about and then his message of hope. John, who is tired of looking for the story of what’s gone, touched me beyond belief. He reminded us that we have this chance to pray for each other and that it blesses us and thanks to Brian and his family for giving us this forum; and finally, Blind Tony and his beautiful poem about clouds. I cried for hours. His message about letting go, acceptance, and patience is exactly what I needed. And afterwards, I was there to read Proverbs 25:11 and 12: A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver. Like a gold ring or an ornament of gold is a wise reprover to a listening ear. Thank you for all of you who call in with your prayers and thanks for being there for all of us. Bless you all. Bye-bye.

Hello, let us pray. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Lord, I lift everyone that has called for a prayer request and everyone that has not called. God, that they sit in silence, thinking that no one’s there, but God I pray that you reach out to them and send them someone to let them know that they are loved, that God is love and that you are with them. Your unconditional love wraps around them. That you are Jehovah Rapha, you are the healer. You are Jehovah Nissi. You are Jehovah Jirreh, the provider. And you are El Roi, you see all and you know all. O God, for all of those who need healing, I pray for healing. For all of those who need financial to provide for their families, I pray for that, God. God, for those that need their minds to be, anxiety to be broken from them, depression, stress, whatever that’s causing the mental status to be unstable, God, I pray and I call it to be stable. I ask that all things that are not of God to be cast out of their head and replaced with the Word of God. I ask that you give them the desire to read your Word and study your Word so that the Holy Spirit may grow inside of each of them. God, I pray for Becky. I reach out to her and I pray that you give her a sense of peace and that her calling in her life, she desires to be a wife, she desires to be a mother, God, give her the desires of her heart. In Jesus’ name, all in your time and perfect will. God, I thank you for everything that you’re doing and I ask for you to continue to do what you are doing. God, I pray for everything that’s going on, God, that is going to work together for your good. We may not understand everything but as long as we be obedient to your Word and trust and have faith in you. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.

Hi family, this is Jennifer from Illinois. I have been a long time listener. I think this is 5 or maybe 6 years now and I just finished the Reframe book. It’s so awesome. Thank you so much, Brian and Jill, for putting all your hard work and effort into this book. Family, I’m calling because I have a big decision that I’m facing, that I need to make, I believe. My daughter and I both were tested with a BRCA1 gene and we both tested positive. While she’s only 27, I’m 47 and I am now at a higher risk for breast and ovarian cancer. While I don’t think I’m going to do anything with my breasts, they’re offering me removal of my ovaries and my fallopian tubes to help lower my risk of ovarian cancer, which seems like the more scary one to me because it’s very hard to detect and they don’t have any good tests; currently they’re consider subpar by the medical community. So I need your prayers, family, because this just seems very daunting to me. It seems very overwhelming. I don’t currently have anything wrong with me. So to just go in and willingly go to an operating room for this. I’ve had 5 C-Sections and I understand somewhat what’s involved and I’m currently the only one in my family now that is still a believer for the last 17 years. My husband still has not joined me in faith, although I know he can help lead me and guide me, God can help us with this decision. But I need the support of my family. And I just wanted to also say a shout-out to Nana J. and Chante. I am praying for you and for your rest. Thank you, family, I really appreciate you guys so much.

Hello Daily Audio Bible family, this is Sinner Redeemed. Lord, these words you’ve given to me, I give back to you. Let’s pray. Heavenly Father, we lift up the woman who called on October 4th, who’s homeless, suffering depression and has lost her zeal for your Word. Although she did not leave her name, you know who she is and what struggles she’s going through. We pray for your provision for her, in body, in mind, in spirit and ask that you would provide for all her needs. We ask for your hand on her life to guide, shelter, and protect her. Lord, render her faith and keep her strong through all trials and suffering. Father God, we lift up Chante of Detroit. We pray for rest, that you would restore her. Give her mind peace and contentment in the Holy Spirit. We ask for your divine touch on her mind to pull her through this time of difficulty and bring her to the other side stronger than she was before. Heavenly Father, Provider and Sustainer, we lift up Matt of Cornwall of the UK. We pray that you would guide Matt to the right situation for his family, that you would provide for all their needs with income and housing. We pray that you open and close doors as appropriate for Matt to serve you and to live in your will for his life. Responding to Sarah of Charlotte, Father God, we lift up Sarah’s sister, Candace. We pray for Candace’s faith to be strengthened that she might endure the challenges of pregnancy and bipolar disorder by relying on you. We ask for peace for Candace and joy and the expectation of the miracle of new life. Father God, we lift up our brother whose call was played on October 7th, who struggles with the spirit of deceit and hopelessness. We pray for this man’s faith and that it would grow and strengthen through the hearing of your Word. Lord, speak truth to this man’s heart, give him wisdom and patience to wait upon your timing and eyes to see your hand at work in his life. We ask all of these things in the mighty name of Jesus, amen.
