Jeremiah 42:1-44:23 ~ 2 Timothy 2:1-21 ~ Psalm 92:1-93:5 ~ Proverbs 26:3-5

Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. Today is October 23rd. I'm Brian. It is great to be here with you today as we move our way through another week. Yeah, I guess we should start thinking about the fact that we’re at the end of the week, tomorrow being the last day. Good to be here with you. We began 2 Timothy yesterday which we will continue, but first, from the Modern English Version, Jeremiah.

Commentary

That proverb really blends perfectly with what Paul is saying in his second letter to Timothy and this isn’t the first time Paul has said stuff like this, but what makes it so poignant, so riveting is that this is his last letter. He is instructing Timothy not to get bogged down in all of the theological arguments. These are going nowhere. And it is here that there is the famous passage: Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that doesn’t need to be ashamed. A lot of times that will get pulled out of context as a defense for all of the theological babbling. Yet, where Paul lands on this is all of the babbling isn’t really getting you any closer to God. You should instruct the people with your life so you study to show yourself approved by God, a workman that doesn’t need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of truth. It boils down to this from Paul, from his pen. There is a saying that we can fall back on. There is a seal.

The Lord knows those who are his and let everyone who calls on the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

So that is fascinating. The Lord knows those who are his, which is to say God knows who are his, he knows those people. But wait a second. He knows those people. He hasn’t heard about them or heard a story about them or watched people studying about him. He knows those people, which in turn means they know him, which is what we’ve been talking about all year when we use the term reframe.

This journey of faith is more than studying and quibbling. It is more than collecting data and then arguing it. It is more than finding facts and then formulating statements. That is not how relationships work at all in our lives. Certainly facts, study, data, all that stuff is a part of any relationship, but it is not bookwork – it is living into what you know is true and believing that the heart of the one that you are in love with, that you are in a relationship with is good toward you. You know them, you don’t just know about them. The Lord knows those who are his, which is to say that we have to know God, not just know a lot about him. Paul's admonition, his last thing that ever gets recorded being said, this last letter contains this dialogue:

Timothy, consider what I'm saying and may the Lord grant you understanding in everything. Remember, Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David, according to the gospel for which I suffer trouble like a criminal, even with chains, but the Word of God is not bound. Therefore, I endure all things for the sake of the elect that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. We have this faithful saying, if we die with him we shall also live with him. If we endure, we shall also reign with him. If we deny him, he will also deny us. If we are faithless, he remains faithful. He cannot deny himself. Just remind everybody about that, commanding them before the Lord that they not argue about words which lead to nothing of value and to the destruction of those who hear them. You study to show yourself approved by God, a workman who has nothing to be ashamed of, rightly dividing the word of truth, but avoid all the profane foolish babbling, for that will just increase to more ungodliness and the word will spread like gangrene.

We study so that we might work out our own salvation with fear and trembling, that we might be pointed in the right direction toward the heart of God. Not so that we will just know the way toward the heart of God, but so that we will walk that path into a relationship with God. Otherwise, everything that we’re doing here every day loses a significant amount of its importance. If we’re stopping by just going, “There, I’ve checked it off my list. I’ve got the scriptures for the day,” if those scriptures do not go into our hearts and orient us to God so that we are then with God throughout our day intimately, conversationally, in a friendship, in a relationship, in a love covenant where he is included in everything, well, then we’ve just read an ancient book. We’ve read some passages from an ancient book.

The miracle is that God wants to be known. We have all of these examples throughout all of the scriptures of his willingness to be available and known. So we can’t stop with just studying God like he's something separate. The scriptures point us to the heart of God and then we go there. So may we walk with God today in all things, talking to him in the ease of a relationship, in a comfortable relationship, not just about things we need him to do, but just to have time, memories made, conversations had, experiences experienced together today and stop trying to get the formula right and then quibbling with everyone about the formulas. God knows those who are his. May we be one of those.

Prayer

Father, we believe that we are – that you have desired a relationship with us and we continually enter into that relationship and continually maintain that relationship, but it is very, very easy for us to substitute without even realizing what we’re doing. It is very easy for us to not be present to you but expect that you are always present to us. This is where you have been working in our lives this year. This is what you’ve been going after all year and it is clicking. We’re starting to get it. What we invariably do is look for the next step. “Okay, okay, I want to be in that relationship. What does that look like? What is that shaped like? How do I do that?” looking for just the next prescription when there is no manual for this kind of relationship, just like there is no adequate manual for any true life-long, loving relationship. It moves. It grows. It contracts. It gives. It takes. It is the shape of life. It is all of it. We have just not welcomed you into all of it. We have welcomed you into a portion of it, a portion that we have segregated and called our spiritual lives as if there is that part of life and then the other life, as if there is some sort of religious life and then the rest of life when what you are desiring from us is our whole hearts, all of life, that you are included in all of it, that we are in this together, that it is a joyride through our humanity, that we have this beautiful time together to enjoy this very, very short, compared to eternity, portion of our existence. So we’re learning, we’re growing, and we’re thankful that you are kind and patient and that you continue to teach us and that you continue to come for us and that you continue to father us and that you continue to love us with an unspeakable love. So keep coming is our request. Keep coming. We invite your Holy Spirit within us to keep leading us into all truth, to keep guiding us, to keep being there in the moment and to keep reminding us that we have to be present in this relationship or we can’t really call it that. So we present ourselves before you. We awaken and quicken ourselves and become present to you so that there isn’t a thought, a word, a deed, there isn’t an experience, there isn’t a conversation, there isn’t a breath that we aren’t present to you, aware of your presence, aware that you are with us and we acknowledge that. We yield to it. We seek the counsel of your Holy Spirit. We seek the counsel of the scriptures as we stay present in this relationship. Come Jesus, we pray, in your holy, precious name. Amen.

Community Prayer Requests and Praise Reports

Hello DAB family. This is Patricia in Fontana, CA. I’ve been a listener for about three years and I pray for each of you daily. I have a prayer request today. I'm having a hysterectomy next Wednesday, the 28th and I would like prayer for my surgeon, for everything to go well, just for it to be an uneventful surgery. And also if any of you wouldn’t mind praying for the salvation of my daughter Amanda. Thank you all for your prayers and I’ll be praying for you guys as well. Thank you.

Hey DAB family. This is Byron out in Florida. Thank you guys so much for praying for my wife. She passed the kidney stone and has been doing well. A special shout-out to Sinner Redeemed and Slave of Jesus. I heard prayers for that and for everybody out there, I know you were praying for her. I have another special prayer request I want to share with you guys. I have all my kids here and I have also wanted to call with little Nehemiah and have him talk to you guys, but he's not really talking. He's 16 months old now and he doesn’t have a single word in his vocabulary that he is speaking with and when I think about it, all my children have had issues with speaking in one way or another. My oldest, Caleb, didn’t talk until he was well into 4 and my girl, Charlotte here is getting close to 4 and there is still a lot of what she says that we don’t understand, but she is doing a lot better. She does talk a lot. Then Nehemiah here is just not saying any words at all. You can kind of hear him now. I wanted you guys to just pray for them. I don’t know if this is a spiritual thing or some sort of physical issue that needs to be resolved or something in how we’re raising our children that we need to change, but I just want their mouths to be opened wide and clear so that they give glory to God and praise him, do what their mouths were meant to do and that is just breathe out prayers to him and thankfulness to him. So you guys have kept my family bathed in prayer all these years and I appreciate it and I would just ask for this as well, for them, that you pray for them, that their mouth be open, that their minds be clear, that they develop fully and properly and that me and my wife, Julie, know best how to bring them about in the Lord. Alright, you guys want to say anything? Say hello? “Hello!” Alright. How about you, Nehemiah? Alright, you guys keep praying for him. I love you guys. Take care.

Hi my new family. This is John S. calling from California. God was gracious enough to lead me to your podcast from my DoggCatcher podcast that I use. Anyway, I have a prayer request, you guys. I recently backslid and I fell and started getting high again and my wife found out about it and we are currently separated. I'm really trying to get back on my feet and find the strength to find my happiness in God and not in drugs. I love the Lord dearly, even in my worst state. I’ve always been led back to him. I love everything about this podcast. You guys are all beautiful. I mean, Brian, I’ve never listened to somebody that has actually shook me up, not in a bad way but in a good way, of just how much you love the Lord, man. It reverberates through your language and your speech. Thank you for doing this podcast because right now it is about the only thing in my life that is keeping me connected to the true source. So if you guys would please throw out a prayer for my marriage, that we restore it, for me to find the strength to lean on God instead of drugs, I would really appreciate it. God bless you guys. I'm sure you’ll be hearing from me again. Bye.

God bless the Daily Audio Bible. God bless Brian and Jill. Let us pray. Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed by thy name. Thy kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us, Lord, this day our daily bread and forgive us of our sins, forgive us of our transgressions, forgive of us of our debts as we forgive those who have debted against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever, amen. God, I thank you for everything that you're doing. Lord, I pray for the people that are in need of prayer. Lord, I pray for the gentleman that FAA is trying to take his license away from him, suspend him for 120 days. God, I pray that you return that decision, God. And I pray that you soften the hearts of the people that are making that decision. I pray that they put themselves in his shoes, that this is the source of income for his family, to take care of his family. God, I pray for the people that are sick and shut-in. I pray for deliverance. Jehovah Rapha, the healer, I pray for Jehovah Jireh, the provider. Lord, I come to you and I thank you and I pray, God, that the DAB family touch and agree with me and I pray for my relationship with my boyfriend and his kids. I pray that God’s will would be done and not our will. I also pray that I have five surgeries that I'm going to be doing here shortly, four of them are minor but one of them is major, that I will live, in Jesus’ name. I pray that God blesses…

Hello Dabbers. This is Faith from Brisbane Australia, just calling with an update on 33-year-old father Brett. On the 9th of September he was given one week to live. It is now the 21st of October. Brett was having trouble eating and losing weight. My daughter visited him on Sunday and the report was that he looked awesome. He had started eating and had a new energy and a sparkle in his eye. I'm trusting God that sparkle is a newfound faith in God. I really felt for the lady who was caring for her elderly mom-in-law in a similar situation who lives in Miami. I felt your pain and I had tears in my eyes before you even got your story out and I would like to pray for you now and for Brett. Heavenly Father, I pray for this lady according to Philippians 4:19: And this same God who takes care of many will supply all your needs from his glorious riches which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. Heavenly Father, I pray for Brett. I thank you, Lord, for his continued healing and for salvation. Heavenly Father, I also pray for my sister who has had many bowel cancer operations. I ask that you would touch her and heal her completely. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, amen. Thanks Dabbers. Love and appreciate you very much.
