Daniel 1:1-2:23 ~ 1 Peter 3:8-4:6 ~ Psalm 119:65-80 ~ Proverbs 28:14

Today is November 25th. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I'm Brian. It's good to be here with you today, excited about this. We finished the book of Ezekiel yesterday which brings us to the book of Daniel in the Old Testament.

Introduction of a New Book

This is a prized book in the Old Testament, both for the historical narrative that is encapsulated in it and because it has been mined for thousands of years in eschatological studies which are the studies of how things play out, how time comes to an end, the future.

Daniel was a contemporary of Ezekiel and was carried away into exile when Jerusalem fell to Babylon in 597 BC. He was obviously favored by God. He was obviously a gifted young man because he became an advisor and an authority in the Babylonian kingdom of Nebuchadnezzar and then beyond.

The first half of the book, as we just get going, starting today, is the narrative about Daniel's life. We’ll find that some of the richest stories in the Bible are in these six chapters. They demonstrate faith in God and God showing up even in exile. So the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego thrown into the fiery furnace is there. The story of Daniel in the lion's den is contained in the first part of this book. Then there will be a shift. The second part of the book shifts to these visions that are incredibly dramatic and over the top visions that Daniel had that are prophetic of four great world empires. Daniel wasn't a prophet for or against Israel. The visions that he had, although they are in the context of Israel because he was Jewish, they are not particularly Jewish in nature.

If eschatology or the study of the end is something that interests you or something that you're a student of, then the book of Daniel is obviously one of the centerpieces of your study. Whether the end times is your passion or not, the book of Daniel is rich in the heritage of God's faithfulness. It's beautiful in its construction and beautiful in its narrative.

So we’re reading from the English Standard Version this week.

Prayer

Father, we do thank you for your Word and it's counsel and it's encouragement and challenge every day to live like we know is right and the constant battle internally in the choices that we make to include you in those. So we thank you that your Word orients us to you, reminds us who we are, pulls us deeper into relationship. We are most grateful. We ask, Holy Spirit, that you would come, that you would help us heed the word of the apostle Peter, that we would have unity of mind, that we would be sympathetic, that we would have love for one another, that we would have a tender heart and a humble mind, that we wouldn’t repay evil for evil, that we would on the contrary bless those who hate us. This is what, according to Peter, we were called to so that we might obtain a blessing. Help us with this, God. Help us to keep our tongue from evil, our lips from speaking deceitfully. Help us to turn away from evil and do good. Help us to seek peace and pursue it. We’re just not capable in our own strength without collaborating with you. But this is what you want, to collaborate with us, to walk in relationship with us, and so we invite you, like we do most every day. Come, Holy Spirit. Walk with us. We need you. We welcome you. We pray this and ask it in Jesus’ name. Amen.

I'm down. I'm praying for your wife, Brian. God will heal her. Jay in New Jersey, boy do I love your prayers. I just love hearing from you. And another person, Richard from Canada, I loved your call. I want to encourage anybody who has had cancer or knows someone with cancer. If you want to email me, I'm at DABJanice@gmail.com. I would love to encourage you. Hey Dabbers. This is Slave of Jesus in North Carolina. Alright, Holy Spirit, let's roll. Lord, we ask you to watch over all the baptisms in Australia. We ask you to come down and touch all those who have chosen to turn their lives over to you in Australia and everywhere as our church had baptism today, in Jesus’ name. Louis W., amen and amen to your prayer about your dealing with your transfusions. For Louis W., we ask all those healings in Jesus’ name. Marriages – Cory from West Virginia and Dawn's marriage, Lord, we ask you to pray over their marriages. We ask you to give them strength, for the men in those marriages to know what to do, and we ask for Dan to hear God's Word as he gets closer to you in this situation, in Jesus’ name. Jay from New Jersey, I loved your thing about the selfishness. Philippians – I'm going to have to look that up and use that in my men's group. James in Japan, finally, love hearing from you, so keep calling back. I’ve always wondered when you pray for me include if it would be for financial provision. It doesn’t come… I’ve had so many miracles, but why doesn’t it come through? I think this may be it. James 4:3 says when you ask you do not receive because you ask with the wrong motives that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. So I'm asking for financial provision and I'm just doing that so I can pay my cell phone bill and my cable bill and my car payment, which some day I'm not even going to have one of those. I don’t know why I think God would come through, but when I’ve come through and just asked for provision of all these charities we’ve been involved with and he's just come through in spades, I believe that is the difference, that when I ask using the right motives, he just seems to come through. When it is a selfish motive, as Jay kind of talked about, it doesn’t happen that way. I don’t know what that is worth. Love you all. Have a great day.

I sit in the sunlight and consider your ways, starting my day with a heart full of praise. I join with the birds singing sweetly in the background. I believe they are praising you too. Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. That is what the psalmist encouraged all life to do. I try to acknowledge you in all of my ways because I believe that blessings are the direct result of a heart full of praise. And for me I found that there is no better way to encourage your favor as I go through the day. My strength in the present, my help in ages past, my only hope for the future for surely this world won't last. And as it fades away along with its desire, please purge me anew with your all-consuming fire. And as you burn up all the things that I don’t need, please reveal them for what they truly are - wood, straw and stubble, but when viewed from afar, they appear to be gold and a source of much gain. But some lessons can only be learned through the experience of adversity and pain, so as I consider your goodness and ponder your ways, I surrender afresh with my heart full of praise. BlindTony1016@gmail.com. Happy Thanksgiving everybody. I would like to give a special shout-out to Sherlock W. Haven’t heard from you in a while, brother. Love you. And also to Deborah C. and Dean. Alright, thank you. Special thank you to the Hardin Family and Mike Greenberg and Sarah, all of you. Happy Holidays. Love you. Bye-bye.

Hello everyone. Good morning. This is Jay calling from New Jersey. I'm calling to pray for Daniel J. Jr. Daniel, I heard you pray this week and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. So if you're listening now, pray with me. Mighty God, creator of heaven and earth and everything in between, we thank you now for your grace, your mercy, your kindness and your never-ending love for us. And we come before you now lifting up Daniel J. Jr., Father. Like all of us brothers and sisters, he's going through a trial. He's going through a situation that is testing every aspect of his being. Mighty God, we first want to thank you for these trials because without them we would not know happiness. We wouldn’t know peace. We wouldn’t know joy. So we thank you, Father, for these tests. Now Father, we thank you also for your precious Word that reminds us that you will never give us a test which you have not prepared us to bear. We thank you for that, Mighty God. We thank you for your precious Word. We thank you for your wonderful sovereignty, knowing that you are in control of all things and this situation is nothing for you to handle. Father, we pray for strength for Daniel. We pray that your will would be done in your own time and that you will provide him with peace and comfort through the Holy Spirit. In the name of your Son, our Lord and our Savior Jesus Christ we pray, amen. Daniel, I love you, man. I'm going to keep praying for you. God bless you.

Good morning DAB family. Today is the 23rd, 8:24 a.m. and I'm just getting to the parking garage at work. Praise God. Praise God. Martin, thank you for calling from France. It is a pleasure to know that you are all okay. Cherry C., Cherry Pie, praise Jesus for your praise report. God is awesome. It's so good when people call in and give a praise report and we know that prayers are not in vain. Paula, the child advocate, my heart goes out for you for Mel, for all these kids that you are helping. I pray that God will continue to give you strength and wisdom and just courage to continue pushing for these kids. And I pray for Mel. I pray that God would transform her life and deliver her from whatever trauma she has experienced in her life. I need you guys to pray for me because finally I have started going through a process just dealing with some things in my life in the past and it is opening doors that I had closed and didn’t know existed, so it is pretty weird. But thank you for praying for me as I go through this processing thing. I praise Jesus. He is always there, always awesome. We have an advocate also who always calls and prays for the persecuted church. Thank you so much and I pray with you every single time. We pray for those in Nigeria, in other places that have been attacked. I pray for God to revive the community of those who are causing pain, that they would be restored and changed, their hearts will be turned around to Christ, in Jesus’ name. I love you guys. Have a blessed week.
