Hosea 4:1-5:15 ~ 2 John 1:1-13 ~ Psalm 125:1-5 ~ Proverbs 29:9-11
Today is December 6th. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian, as I am most days. Actually, I hopefully am every day. It's good to be here with you today at the beginning of a new week. Today is the second Sunday in the season of Advent, if you observe the Advent season. It's beautiful. I didn’t observe it growing up, but it has come to mean a lot to me just for what it is, these days, this month before Christmas that we anticipate, that we contemplate deeply the mystery of the arrival of the Savior into the world. So this is the second Sunday in the season of Advent and we begin this week together. We’ll read from The God's Word translation this week and pick up where we left off yesterday.

Introduction of a New Book

Yesterday we finished up the letter of John known as 1 John which brings us to 2 John, the second epistle of John written shortly after he wrote the first letter and probably to the same people he wrote the first letter to. This letter was probably written from Ephesus where John spent the latter years of his life and was written to encourage and strengthen the church against the false doctrine that was so pervasive around them and to remind them that they needed to guard themselves against these false doctrines and live in truth and love in contrast to these false teachings. This is all true today. There is plenty of false doctrine around, plenty of things to be seduced by and it is very important that we walk in truth and love, guarding ourselves as we carry forward the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Of course, we do this by immersing ourselves in the scriptures every day and we also do this by being in an actual relationship with God. It's a lot more difficult to believe something incorrectly about a person you actually know personally than it is to have accumulated a lot of data and try to parse out what might be true. When you know somebody, you know them. You know their character. You know their personality and this is available, a relationship with God. So we begin 2 John chapter 1.

Prayer

Thank you, Father, for this new week to venture in with you in community and in communion as we walk into this beautiful season of your arrival, as we contemplate that you left infinity, eternity, your all-powerful nature and condescended yourself to become one of us, to show us life, abundant life and then to give yourself as a sacrifice for our sin. This is unspeakable in its magnitude. We haven’t the words. We’ve been trying for centuries, even millennia but it's too great for us. You are amazing. You are perfect. You are beautiful. You have loved us so well. We’ve missed it so much of the time, but in this season as we contemplate your arrival, we focus deeply on what you gave up to be here and on how you enriched the human race by restoring us to yourself. It is unbelievable and we worship you. We are grateful. We love you. Help us, Holy Spirit, to love you in spirit and in truth. We ask this in the precious and almighty name of Jesus, our Savior. Amen.
