Zechariah 1:1-21 ~ Revelation 12:1-17 ~ Psalm 140:1-13 ~ Proverbs 30:17

Today is December 21st. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. Great to be here with you today taking another step into Christmas week and through the Bible and undoubtedly you’ve noticed we’ve been moving rapidly through the minor prophets as we move toward the end of the scriptures. We’re continuing that. We begin today the book of Zechariah.

Introduction to a New Book

Zechariah was written during the reign of the Persian king, Darius. So you’ll remember the Persians overcame the Babylonians. The Babylonians had taken the children of Israel into their exile. This falls within the same general time period that Haggai was written. Haggai and Zechariah were contemporaries. Within the first couple of verses, Zechariah reiterates what is the central theme of the Old Testament and, for that matter, the Bible – return to me and I will return to you.

Throughout this book of prophesy, God confirms his acceptance of an authentic worship, something that is coming from a true place and to show that God is at work. They confirm God's sovereignty and clarify his control over the beginning and endings of man. This is not to say that God usurps a person's will that was bestowed by God in the first place. Everyone is responsible for their choices, but God is sovereign over all.

There are eight different visions and two oracles contained in the book of Zechariah. Much of the imagery is a clear and beautiful foreshadowing of Jesus. A beautiful time to read through this book this Christmas week. Contained in these visions and throughout the imagery in them, we are offered great hope and promise.

So we begin, reading from the Modern English Version this week, Zechariah.

Prayer

Thank you, Father, for another day in your Word. Thank you for the promises in your Word. Thank you for the revealing of yourself in your Word when we can understand over the course of thousands of years that you have constantly been coming, constantly been calling for our return, constantly fathering people, constantly being involved. Thank you for your involvement in our lives. Where would we be? The truth is we wouldn’t exist. We wouldn’t have the breath of life in us. We wouldn’t have a life or a will to choose at all were it not a gift from you. So we ask not only that you plant the words spoken today from the scriptures into our lives, but by the power of your Holy Spirit we ask that you come that we might return the gift of life, that we might give our lives back in relationship with you, not as some sort of high and lofty concept, but that we might walk with you today, right now. Come Holy Spirit, we pray in Jesus’ name, amen.

Community Praise Reports and Prayer Requests

Hello Daily Audio Bible family. This is Dave from Jekyll Island, GA, a small island off the coast of Georgia. Calling this morning to just intercede for Jeff who called several weeks ago. Jeff is a student at Virginia Tech in landscape architecture and Jeff, you were asking about God's direction for your life and fulfilling that direction, determining that direction and I’ve been praying for you, Jeff. I was at Virginia Tech. I'm a Hokie also, some 45 years ago. Jeff, I would just encourage you to continue to do what you're doing, that is seek his face and seek God's direction through his Word, through other believers, through prayer. Just remember that there probably is not one direction for your life that God has, but multiple directions so in this season of your life, it may be that God wants you to be in landscape architecture and there may be a time later on in your life, another season that evolves where he opens it up to you for just direction. So I’ll continue to pray for you, Jeff. Best wishes for the holidays.

Hey family. This is Jim calling from the Central Coast of California. I just wanted to add a reminder to everybody about the DAB Marriage List. You can send that in by email. We’re doing it by email. We’re sending out a blast here and there to all the people who want to pray for marriages and want their marriages prayed up and remember what a blessing it is to pray for other marriages and how important that is, as much as getting your marriage prayed for. So the email address is DABMarriageList@gmail.com. I’ve been hearing a lot of people struggling, separations and divorces and threats and things like that, so put your name on there. Let us pray for you. Okay? We’ll get you through these tough times. Also, family, if I could just ask you to continue to lift up my daughter Cassandra. She struggles with her own mental health issues, emotional stability and finding some grounding in her life. Would you please continue to pray for her? And for healing especially. She is 22 and she has just kind of gone off the rails and she needs to get back on track with Jesus and with her life. And continue to pray for our son Alexander as he battles his addictions and starts to put his feet back on the ground living a sober life. Appreciate that, family. Love you guys so much. Take care. God bless. Peace.

Hi everyone. This is Remembering Redemption in California. I’ve been listening for the past two weeks and I truly love this podcast. I love to listen to God's Word in such a peaceful way. Thank you, Brian, for this wonderful contribution you provide the community and I want to reach out to the woman in Florida from Friday's podcast. When I heard your message my heart truly… I just wanted to reach out to you. God pressed upon my heart to speak with you. Last year or in the past two years my husband and I faced our own battles and we still do. We almost were getting divorced two years ago and after I had committed horrible action against both him and God. I'm very sorry that you have to feel that sorrow, but I'm praying for your healing emotionally and physically as well. I pray your husband can find Christ and you can rejoice in his name. I pray your heart finds solace in the Word of God. I hold tight to the verse Jeremiah 29:11 daily and I would love to share that with you and the strength that I gained from that as well. My friend, God will never leave you. And I pray that your marriage will be reconciled and not torn apart by the enemy. He does not want happiness and wants to destroy every marriage. I pray for your strength as you face negative situations. I pray that God will bless your path and that he directs your feet. I will be praying continuously and remember that his plan is better than we can imagine. Alright, everyone, hope to hear more from you guys. Thank you for all the great contributions and all the prayer requests that all come through. Bye.

Greetings, fellow Dabbers. This is Pedro H. from Rio Grande Valley down here in South Texas. I can actually say a rock's throw from Mexico. This is my first time calling and this is my first year that I'm going through the Bible with you all. I just want to wish you all a Merry Christmas. May God grant you the desires of your heart. I say this with all my heart. Greetings, fellow Dabbers. Bye-bye.

Good morning family or good afternoon, good evening wherever you are in the world. Drew from the Bay Area, Andrew. Hey, a shout-out to Asia and Blind Tony. The reason for my call today is that I'm just feeling the oppression of the holidays and this world. You know, I was just coming out of work. I thought I had to work today and it turned out I didn’t. I work at this warehouse store and people like to buy mountains of stuff and fill up these huge carts. Anyway, I just was really feeling low and then I heard Richard from down under. You know, you're so right, brother. When we focus on the world and focus on ourselves and the past, it's not a good thing. We need to stay focused on Christ and what he has for us and trust God. Though these days are low points, I know that God is not going to forget what his plans are for me and for you. So thank you, brother, for reaching out and sharing those verses with us. Please pray for my daughter Marin. I miss her so much. I told her I have forgiven her and she doesn’t think she needs any forgiveness. She hasn’t done anything wrong, yet she's wreaked havoc in our family. I know I pray for all of you who are going through the same thing. Ann from North Carolina, I know you miss your children, too. Alex, the pre-Christian, I hope you found the Lord, brother, and you're listening. I love all you guys.

The light of the Father resides within us all, calling relentlessly with his incessant call. We turn to the Father and give your very best to the stranger as well as your neighbor, your first fruits and nothing less. Encourage your brother because he bears light, too. Let your words be honest, faithful and true. Live in harmony with nature and all things living. Be quick to confess and even quicker at forgiving. Be temporal, seeking the eternal, fleshly but speaking the spiritual. And as you transcend your mortality and value, you’ll reach a place that is ethereal, joined with all mankind and universal, unanimous praise, back with the Father once again, the Ancient of Days. What a wonderful picture of things yet to come, back with the Father, all men, not just some. But in the meantime, Father, as we work towards that place, please give us daily more mercy and grace. More oil for our light, more Holy Spirit so when you speak to us, my Father, we have not choice but to hear it because sometimes our light starts to flicker and they may even seem to dim because they are locked behind our fleshly shells, imprisoned within. But the darkness will never overcome and extinguish the light. Inevitably all men try to do what is right. Help us to be more loving, to really care about our brothers, to truly let our little light shine and join with them of others because all of us have the light of God dwelling within, calling to us relentlessly, come back once again.
