Bible Questions and Spiritual Discussion

The Scriptural basis for Tithing.
Greetings sisters and brothers in Christ,

A discussion is taking place in my Christian Fellowship group at work about the scriptural basis for Tithing.

There also seems to be a large variance in people's understanding of how much to tithe.

Could anyone please point me at scripture that answers these two questions. Illumination around any periphery issues would be good too!

God bless,
Ian

Hi Ian

Check out Malachi 3:8-12

"Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me.
"But you ask, 'How are we robbing you?'
"In tithes and offerings.

You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me.

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the lord Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.

I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe," says the lord Almighty.

"Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land," says the lord Almighty.

Also take a look at Luke 12:15-34. Hope you have a great day!

Dave Ramsey makes the great point that in Scripture tithing is a requirement but offerings only happen when there is a surplus. So if I give an offering that causes me to break contract with the electrical company, I'm still robbing!

For years I have enjoyed this video, describing the possible thoughts that might happen for us as our thoughts go through the process of considering tithing...
