Bible Questions and Spiritual Discussion

Writers of the bible?
I do have faith in God and he has touched my life. I feel a way that the devil attacks me is through not knowing enough about scripture. In the DAB today Brian said about we don't know who wrote Samuel 2. Do we know who did?

oh dear. This thread will turn into a massive scholarly debate forum. According to the RSV, two sources are claimed as making up the content of the books of Samuel - the Early and Late Sources. The identity of the writer of 1 and 2 Samuel is, in either case, unknown. The early source was written during the reign of Solomon, and the "late source" is really an identification for all the additional narratives and edits done after the post - exilic period (after around 586 BC). In other words, the content of this book varies to some extent in its ultimate dating, but we could safely say somebody with religious affiliation wrote much of 1 and 2 Samuel during the reign of Solomon, possibly Abiathar (1 Samuel 22.20 - 3) or Ahimaaz (2 Sam 18.19 - 32)

however, in close, not everyone is in agreement on the exact facts of scripture - the RSV editors suggested Daniel was written during the Maccabean period (c. 170s - 160s BC) rather than shortly after exile (500s BC), which seems to be false, IMO.

Any book suggestions or other resources that are considered trustworthy or orthodox on this subject? I'm kinda interested in learning a little more about origins of the biblical texts and the development of the cannon, but as you said James, it's a "massive scholarly debate".

Interesting post!

I was just watching these videos called "why 66" on the formation of the canon and found them very interesting. I think parts of them may be an "eat the meat and spit out the bones" sort of thing, but still very informative! I thought I'd share them here.

Blessings,
John

hell, why not, if you're really curious, just go out and eat up everything! gnostic gospels, apocrypha, the pseudepigrapha...
(of course, that's probably 3 times as much literature as the bible altogether you'd be reading, but hey!)
