Fear of God by God for God
Jeremiah 32:40 (New International Version)

I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good to them, and I will inspire them to fear me, so that they will never turn away from me.

Just sharing.

"it is not how you pick up your cross, but that you do".
an old fool on these forums shared that during a thread war.
and I extend it to you - pick up your cross and carry Him!

Jonathan, great verse. The word for fear there is, "yirah" (Strong's H3374) and means fear; an awesome or terrifying thing; respect, reverence and piety.

Proverbs 1:20 through 2:5 describes how we can gain and understand the Fear of the Lord:

"Wisdom shouts in the street, she lifts her voice in the square; at the head of the noisy streets she cries out; at the entrance of the gates in the city she utters her sayings: 'How long, O naive ones, will you love being simple-minded? And scoffers delight themselves in scoffing and fools hate knowledge? Turn to my reproof, behold, I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you. Because I called and you refused, I stretched out my hand and no one paid attention; and you neglected all my counsel and did not want my reproof; I will also laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your dread comes, when your dread comes like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you. Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently but they will not find me, because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear (Strong's H3374) of the LORD. They would not accept my counsel, they spurned all my reproof. So they shall eat of the fruit of their own way and be satiated with their own devices. For the waywardness of the naive will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them. But he who listens to me shall live securely and will be at ease from the dread of evil.' My son, if you will receive my words and treasure my commandments within you, make your ear attentive to wisdom, incline your heart to understanding; for if you cry for discernment, lift your voice for understanding; if you seek her as silver and search for her as for hidden treasures; then you will discern the fear (Strong's H3374) of the LORD and discover the knowledge of God."

Proverbs 8:13a defines what the Fear of the Lord is, and again it is explained in the context of gaining wisdom, in Proverbs 8:1-13 and on:

"Does not wisdom call, and understanding lift up her voice? On top of the heights beside the way, where the paths meet, she takes her stand; beside the gates, at the opening to the city, at the entrance of the doors, she cries out: 'To you, O men, I call, and my voice is to the sons of men. O naive ones, understand prudence; and, O fools, understand wisdom. Listen, for I will speak noble things; and the opening of my lips will reveal right things. For my mouth will utter truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips. All the utterances of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing crooked or perverted in them. They are all straightforward to him who understands, and right to those who find knowledge. Take my instruction and not silver, and knowledge rather than choicest gold. For wisdom is better than jewels; and all desirable things cannot compare with her. I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, and I find knowledge and discretion. The fear (Strong's H3374) of the LORD is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverted mouth, I hate.'"

bibleman,

I couldn't help but notice your comment re some "old fool" who was part of a kind of "thread war".....! are you not keeping that war alive by judging someone as you seem do on this forum? or perhaps I am missing something here. I just joined the DAB forum pages a few weeks ago and hope to see civility in our dealings with one another and leave the "name calling" to God. just a thought.
