Bible Questions and Spiritual Discussion

Where to start?
I have not touched a bible in many many years...I am trying rebuild my faith and would like to understand the bible. There are so many versions out there, I don't know where to start....I would like something simple, something I can understand...

Any suggestions?

Here is some information that may help you: http://www.bibletopics.com/biblestudy/20.htm
I recommend trying out some different versions. Try reading John 1 in a number of Bibles. You can do this inmany Book Stores. You can also try some out on-line. Try reading the same passage in mnay translations at ww.biblegateway.com.
I like to read from a variety of translations myself.

Yep, the book of John is a really good place to walk. It changed me when I spent a good amount of time in it because Jesus just floors you with who He is. I was fortunate enough to find a group of guys to talk about it with and I'd suggest you try to do that, also, if possible. It will give you a focused time to look forward to and keep you going when times get hard. Share the load, if you will.

This is something to think about wrt bible study. It is from the prospective of a study leader, but in essence you are the leader at this point and so the advice is probably for you, also. http://www.christianitytoday.com/biblestudies/articles/bibleinsights/080924.html?start=1

Jami, I have found for me personally the NET Bible is the easiest modern translation to read and understand. Also The New Living Bible which is my personal favorite written in a way to be understandable by the modern American reader without sacrificing full meaning. There are simpler versions but they lack alot in translation.

Lord I pray for Jami that you will guide him right now.

Lots of wonderful advice! :-)

Just thinking too, Jami, while reading this thread: whichever version you settle upon, don't read alone. At The Meeting House we practice something called "the community hermeneutic," which is a way of taking all that you read in quiet times and then process through all of that in a group setting ("small group," or "life group," or "home church"). A wonderful intake and output occurs by doing this; the Spirit speaks to you in your individual walk with Christ as well as deepening and strengthening relationships with others, via what each individual brings to the table in all that they have been given insight of.

Are you part of a church or local gathering, Jami?

Praying with you,

Tom

Hi Jami! The New International Version (NIV) is a simple and beautiful thought for thought rendering of Scripture while the New American Standard Bible (NASB) or the English Standard Version (ESV) are more of a literal word for word translation of the Bible. New KIng James is great, too. As was mentioned, try biblegateway to see which translation speaks to your heart most.

Blessings,

Ted
