Bible Questions and Spiritual Discussion

Time with God for who he is, not for what he can do for me
so, in the past week I've heard three times--a sermon, a talk at communion and then in last night's devotional--that we should spend time with God for who he is, not for what he can do for us. I agree with this thought....I know my motivation is to spend time with him for what he can do for me...his healing, his blessings....but I can't honestly say that i spend time with God just to be with him.

Any insights on how to reach this place in life?

Hey Ken,

The first thing that came to mind for me is to just keep doing what we're doing by spending time in the bible, and in prayer...... like what we do in the DAB community every day.

We all approach God because we want something......salvation, forgiveness, love...... what I've found is the more time spend with God the more depended I become, to the point that I feel the need to be with God constantly. And this isn't a self limiting dependence but rather one that frees you from the very things that hold one in bondage.

Jesus came to give us life, to give us abundant life. And yeah I want that!! I want that big time. So I don't know if God really expects us to be the "cool" kid standing in the corner saying "yeah, I'm just here because I want to be here, I don't need anything from God". All I know is I need a lot from God, because I'm a wreck with out Him. How does the verse go? "If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask Him!" (Matt 7:11) So maybe its not that we what things from God but its what we want from God?

Could it be that God wants both? I think He wants us to spend time with him not just because we want something from Him, but because we love being with Him. I also think that studying Jesus, and his personality helps you want to hang out with God. Because his personality is amazing. I am in the midst of a book study of "Beautiful Outlaw" and it has shifted the way I look at God. I do think we also NEED him big time.
