Jesus the Foundation
"For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have - Jesus Christ. Anyone who builds on that foundation may use a variety of materials - gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay or straw. But on the judgement day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person's work has any value. IF the work survives, that builder will receive a reward. But if the work is burned up, the builder will suffer great loss. The builder will be saved, but like someone barely escaping through a wall of flames."(1 Corinthians 3:11 - 15)
What are ways you have built wrong things on the Foundation of Christ?
for me, I have built it on philosophy and reclusiveness in the past. I came up with all these logical ways of pointing to Jesus (with all good intention - not all of it totally wrong, perhaps!), and took verses like 2 Corinthians 6:14 - "don't team up with those who are unbelievers.." to what I believe to be an unnecessary extreme.

Then came a period of judgement. The false structure I built my faith around was burnt up. I was burnt as well. 2 years later, I continue to recover.

I know now we shouldn't just 'go with the flow' of someone's theology because we feel better. the comfort zones we spiritually place ourselves in can be disastrous. My experience showed that.

So what have we built our 'skyscraper of faith' around? what are we placing on the foundation of Christ that isn't that foundation?

"We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding."(Colossians 1:9)

let us pray that prayer.

welcome back! In what ways may you have made or are making mistakes that result in building poor quality materials on Jesus' foundation?

John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

The teaching of Jesus Christ is the “How To” that frees us from the limitations of the flesh. Without it we remain flesh conscious; under the state of being that Paul called “the natural man.”

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. (1 Cor. 2:14KJV)

Under this state of being we limit ourselves to our human intellect, we debase the scripture to our human understanding and we are unable to receive the knowledge of the God, which is the only way that we can escape the limitations of the flesh.

Jesus is the foundation because; the belief in spirit is the rock on which the church of Jesus Christ stands.

The acceptance of the spirit through faith in the word of Jesus Christ makes us free to accept “THE TRUTH” that we do not yet understand, and it also gives us the confidence that a new understanding would be revealed to us by the spirit.

As Jesus said to Simon Peter; it’s not the flesh that has revealed this unto you, but it’s the Spirit; my Father which is in heaven.

And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. (Matthew16:17-18KJV)

James, I think the latest error for me has not been building so much on wrong thinking but in half hearted living. Something happens when I live in total immersion that opens doors between kingdoms. Without those doors open, I build in the wrong kingdom, no matter how much I might long to do otherwise.

The new covenant is about living in the spirit. 1 Cor was written to a people who were struggling, immature, and un-spiritual. I think I've fit that bill at times. I regret my son rejected the faith. I sent him to all the right programs. But did I love him? I don't remember asking the spirit to show me how to love him during those days.

Rom 8:5 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.

What I sense in your text, James, is YOUR past structure, and sure the text is talking about what someone builds. But we can't build it. John 15:5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." I can't make my son walk with the spirit.

The new covenant isn't like the old one. Karma (reap what you sow) isn't the law of the world. We can only set our mind on him, be thankful for what he has done, and ask for the next step. Then maybe the building has a chance in the flame. John 9:3 '“Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.' We are blind in our condition, but we can still be used to display the his work.

BTW, I think sometimes we think of these flames as punishment. I think it is his glory. He isn't carrying a big stick with which to whack us when we mess up. He is love and against his love, nothing can stand.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.
