Pope Benedict will step down as head of the Catholic Church on February 28, the Vatican confirmed Today.
A pope has not step down since 1415.
What does this mean?

It means that the college of cardinals will soon convene in Vatican City and elect a new pope! Habemus Papam!

I like Pope Benedict XVI. I hope they elect another staunch, dogmatic apologist. One can't stand to tall for the truth of the Faith in these perilous days when much of what passes for the sciences is actually mythology and people are crying out for a sign-post instead of a weather vane. Not that the Church is likely to install a weather vane. Yet even Catholicism has been ravaged by the scourge of progressive social-gospel and the emerging/emergence movements - which are really not faith at all, but simply humanism and secularism wrapped up in religious terminology.
Pope Benedict, you will be missed!

Craig, I am far short of what would be required to be pope. I don't even know Latin much less the seven different languages that Pope Benedict does. But it was kind for you to say that. I am glad that you are still gathering fruit from Word On Fire. I love that podcast!
My hope is nothing more than that the next pope will be orthodox to the Catholic faith and image Jesus to the world. I believe that the Holy Spirit will provide for both.
Ted, those are kind words about the pope. I love Benedict as well. There are some Catholics in varied places who put too much emphasis on the social aspects of our faith to the detriment of the truth. The election of a new pope will not change those people. The social element of our faith is an important part of what we believe Jesus is calling us to, but so far as it goes against the revealed truths from Jesus, ideas of social justice are actually injustices. True justice comes from God who always wanted us to care for the poor, but not in a way that would set aside faith or morality.
Chris, this so-named "International Tribunal into Crimes of Church and State (ITCCS)" is a "tribunal" of one person who is on a personal crusade against the Catholic Church. He is privy to no evidence against Pope Benedict. The meeting referred to was asked for by the prime minister of Italy, not by Pope Benedict. And it is unlikely that the Pope would request any immunity from anyone considering the fact that he already will be granted immunity by the sovereign Vatican City state. Said immunity is only needed because there are wackos out there like Kevin Annett who will sue anyone for anything regardless of truth. In short, no one has done more in the Catholic Church than Pope Benedict/Cardinal Ratzinger to insure the protection of children and the movement for justice for victims and the criminal priests who committed these horrible crimes.

Just an update, there was no news anywhere of any request by Pope Benedict XVI for any immunity from the Italian government. By all accounts, the idea of such was completely fabricated by an individual who needs our prayers very much.

I love Pope Francis. He washed the feet of some inmates and caused a stir. This is a great, great man to be able to do this.

I love the humility. Our church service would do a foot-washing service once per month as part of the communion service (Mennonite). I understand fully the social awkwardness of this tradition. It was amazing to see the pictures in the news of what Pope Francis taught the world today.
