yeah, Jesus totally spoke in "thee"s, "thine"s and "thou"s. yup. Makes perfect sense.
and don't listen to him. He's trying to bait you.

Jesus didn't use KJV -- the date above puts it how many years AD? Lots.

shhhhhh John.... just tip your hat and move on! ;) The point is that when you are dealing with people who think God speaks KJ English, there isn't much you can say to budge them. He was a very cute old guy though!

I just realized this thread is full of Peter, James, and John! I'm in such good company!

I've been away due to computer malfunction and family health issues,
but in scanning this thread, I find it incredible that anyone would suggest the KJV as a standard, if for no other reason than that many older manuscripts not available to the KJV translators have been discovered in the intervening years.
I also keep wondering why the translation I grew up on and which for years was my "standard" is hardly ever mentioned - the RSV (Revised Standard Version). I don't even know if Brian ever reads from the RSV, I really don't remember. In my tradition, the RSV and NIV are the most frequently used, and the multivolume The New Interpreter's Bible, uses those two verses in parallel columns.

they don't use the RSV because, I think, protestant evangelicals go apenuts over it because of its translation of Isaiah 7:14 was "young woman" and not "virgin".
in fact, at least one pastor burned a copy of the RSV during a sermon. Talk about crazy - holy books have been being burned since before pastor Jones' quran stunt.

and by the way, RSV is the direct descendant of the KJV. Minus most of the archaic language.
and then there's the NRSV, which I may want to get a copy of.

WOW had no idea this was happening. Nice. :) So I like the KJV because it's a fine Anglican document BUUUUUT. It was nowhere near the first English translation of the Bible. It's authoritative tone is simply old English. Many would say "proper" english.

Sigh. Are we all still having these arguments? If you're really, really that into the exact and true translation the only option is to stop talking about which is best and actually learn Greek and Hebrew. You will also need to learn Aramaic for context. Once you've mastered these languages you can translate the Scriptures for yourself but look out because there will be those who come knocking on your door to feed you to the lions because you didn't translate it for their personal taste and personality.

I've actually sat with Bible translation teams and they are not sitting there deciding how to screw up the Bible and neutralize it's power. There are large teams of scholars who have devoted their educational and vocational lives to the pursuit of accurate Biblical study. They sit and argue over the exact intent and meaning of each word or phrase and attempt to stay as close as possible through language and hermeneutics to get it right. Then they get bashed for all their efforts.

Translation is NOT easy. If you are a translator you hear one thing in one language and filter in your experience of that language, culture and tone and then make decisions about how to best articulate that to another culture. It can be quite subjective and therefore massive teams of scholars are assembled for these tasks so that no one persons voice is dominant.

KJV is great. It's quite outmoded to the way people actually talk today but it sounds very reverent and religious so it's great. At the time it sounded contemporary and people were happy to read something they could understand. It wasn't the first English translation and it won't be the last and somehow the world keeps turning.
