Another suggestion would be to not walk it alone. Study it through with others and you will be amazed at what is uncovered. I was.

I'm torn between John, Luke and Mark. John and Luke are the ones that been been recommended the most, but a spiritual mentor of mine has a bible study for Mark.

Hi Wes,

I’m late in the game, but here is my two cents.

When I joined a Bible study for the beginners years ago, the book they chose for us was Luke. Reason being, the author Luke was a Gentile historian/doctor. Which means, Luke explains the events happened with accuracy in a non-Jewish tradition. After we finished Luke, we went on to read Acts, which was supposed to be written by the same author. There was a good sense of continuity there, and by the time you finish Acts, you get a good overview as to “what has happened” during Jesus’ time, after He died, and how the apostles spread the Good News. Reading Acts before reading epistles helps, because you can put them into historical context.

I recommend Luke for this reason. John is deep, but it may be a bit challenging for beginners. Mark is also a good start, because it is the shortest and oldest of the four.

As Ray suggested, joining a study group also helps. You may get a chance to lead the group, which would give you incentive to really study it. If your mentor has a study group on Mark, that would be a great start!

Hey Wes,

I would read Luke and then Acts both written by Luke this would get pretty much the whole history from Christs birth to death to the growth of the Church.

I'd actually suggest that you do Mark first maybe get some Christianity explored resources toboot Mark's gospel is the shortest and its not desperately heavy. If you have Christianity explored stuff its great, if you can get on a course doing it together with others or get some folks together all the better - Rico Tice really breaks it all down and makes it soooo simple it won't give up all the theological depth of John or the acute detail of Luke but I think that will be an excellent foundation for further study.
Enjoy!

Hands down...The Gospel of John. John centers around Christ as God. Despite the fact that some find John to be a bit deep, let the Holy Spirit will guide you into all truth.

Um, I'm gonna be the shallow one and say Matthew cause it always invokes memories of Christmas's past when I read the first chapters. You know... the "feel-good" stuff. Maybe not the perspective you were looking for, but it's what I think of...

"In the days of Ceasar Augustus, word went out that all the world should be enrolled."

Oh yeah, that's the good stuff!

Whether you're just beginning or not John's book resolves specifics concerning some of the Synoptics same stories yet goes a step further which is indicated with He identifying it was not the"Other Apostles" who complained about Mary's anointing Christ with expensive Nard it was Judas and he explains why.John's recounting of Christ's orations are beyond attemptively thorough and seemingly impossible yet Christ did utter that the spirit would provide memory and understanding. He being John achieves it and his co witnesses who mention they are the scribes of his book via his notes prove it being they are the only Gospel book source that places the Temple expulsion at the beginning instead of the synoptics who consistently place it at the end.Wo!Obviously shuffled since they only transcribe yet weren't the originators.Plus John is the only book that scribes Christ once and only once explaining that the "Son of Man" He constantly professes is actually the Son of God or else His Son of Man utterance would be some deeper than deep elyptical reference we could only contemplate. He resolves!Matthew is the only book that gives another version of Christ being called Good Master and Christ's response to the wealthy man being a seeming open ended deference to God the Father yet He provides a version that is markedly unique which makes sense since Matthew's book is attributed to the apostle Matthew which Mark and Luke are not being non apostolic. My opinion John and Matthew's books are crucial yet Luke provides exclusive glimpses that reveal he had access to Joanna who was married to Chuza who was Herod's steward. Why else would he be the only book who perports that Christ bounced between Pilate's court twice with Herod visited in between. The others don't and they don't include the glimpse of Joanna which makes sense since she would provide the Herod realm story married to his steward. There are certain discrepancies yet the four books consumatingly provide an uncanny witness that if proving some facts they absolutely differ via their seperate accounts the information they represent or mis represent merely reveals they weren't there for the sketchy scenarios such as Christ's Golgotha walk with Cross carrying help or not. That proves what the story proclaims which is they vacated except for Peter and John and only John at the cross site.Don't their occasionally conflictive accounts specifically prove it?God and Christ are brilliant!Christ did mention that the spirit would provide them what they required as far as memory and understanding and their grasp of some of the occurances that they couldn't have witnessed is proven with varied expressed accounts. It seems you'll get out of the Gospel books what you invest and it's beyond worth it.The believing mind body and soul will be granted the deepest understanding via nature which is God 's providence.Great wishes with your Bible studies. It took years to gather the volume of understanding I aquiesced.Take care and God bless the blessed!Absolutely no twisted parallels!Absolutely straight forward!Gary V.
